Title

A stunner of an album.

This self titled album is the fifth in the arsenal of Anubis Gate, a band who all things considered, should be right up their with the prog metal giants. Why they are not is a mystery because since their debut album 'Purification' in 2004 the band have written what can only be described as a plethora of amazing prog metal CD's, 'The Detached', 'A Perfect Forever' and 'Andromeda Unchained' are albums that all self-respecting fans of the genre should own. And the self-titled newie is no exception to that rule. The combination of the band's musical prowess and song writing capabilities have once again come to the fore on this release and the sheer quality of the music shines throughout each and every aspect of the album.

If you're a fan of old you might be surprised to find out that vocalist Jacob Hansen has left the band due to an increasing workload, but fear not because main songwriter and bassist Henrik Fevre has stepped up to the mike and his performance on this album is nothing short of wonderful. Proof, if it were needed of this, can be found on the stunning opening track 'Hold Back Tomorrow', which is a heavy, intricate song that Anubis Gate do so well, the vocal melodies that infuse it aren't immediately apparent but on subsequent listens they become more upfront and you discover whole new vistas of sound that you might well have missed first time around. This clever way of making you come back time and again can be found everywhere on this album; check out 'Facing Dawn' with its superb hook and amazing guitar work or 'The Re-Formation Show' with its guitar heavy riff, clean vocal lines and clever keyboard runs for proof that this band are something special.

For me though, it is on the longer more intense tracks where the band shine, the eight minute plus 'World In A Dome' begins with an intricate bass and drum battle that is joined by a hard hitting guitar attack, then the vocals of Fevre bring in some wonderful melody lines, that weave their way into this powerful song and make you want to stay in its presence for a long time. The ten minutes of 'Circumstanced' also deserve the listeners undivided attention because again the complex nature of Anubis Gate's music demands that you pay respect to it, the track itself is full of subtle time changes, clever lyrics, amazing performances and to tell you the truth it's just so damn good to listen to.

So, Anubis Gate is back with one of 2011's highlights and if you hanker for great music then you have to have this album. Don't be put off by the complexity or intricacy I mentioned because the songs are so good that on repeated plays they will reveal their glories. It's a stunner of an album and no mistake, and about time that Anubis Gate took their rightful place amongst the greats of their genre.
