First new Evanescence album in five years.

When I received the debut CD from Ben Moody's new band We Are The Fallen last year my review likened it to the first Evanescence album 'Fallen' and I must admit that my sceptical levels were off the charts regarding another release from Amy Lee & Co. Imagine my surprise 5 years after sophomore effort 'The Open Door' when a new Evanescence CD hit the shelves.

Self titled to reflect a collaborative band ethos, it is even more surprising to discover that the line-up remains unchanged and we have the same 5 protagonists that finished the tour in support of the last album. Not sure if I'm getting lazy or whether I really like it but Evanescence has been stuck in the car CD player for the best part of 2 weeks now. After so many spins there is an overall feeling of familiarity and there is nothing in terms of progression but I guess if you are an Evanescence fan then that is how it should be? If 'Bring Me To Life', 'Going Under' or 'Call Me When You're Sober' left you cold then you will not find anything here to give you a warming glow but if Ms Lee gave you any kind of pleasure in the past then I can guarantee you will changing your underwear just as often this time round. Amy's vocals are strong and the production, courtesy of Nick Raskulinecz, is full on and gives the whole package a nice crunch, with the guitars of Terry Balsamo and Troy McLawhorn quite high in the mix.

The writing formula seems to be following an established blueprint and despite the fact some songs are very similar in terms of structure and pacing I still find myself involved enough to appreciate the quality. Personal favourites include the uptempo numbers 'Erase This' and 'Oceans', the brooding 'My Heart Is Broken' and melancholic overtones of 'Lost In Paradise' which could be the bastard musical offspring of 'My Immortal' and 'Lithium'. The final track on the regular version, 'Swimming Home', drags far too much and brings proceedings to an overly sombre conclusion so thankfully there is a deluxe package containing 4 extra tracks, all worthy of merit, plus a bonus DVD detailing the recording process. With such a long period of time between releases one could conceivably treat this as the most important one so far. The members of Evanescence have had to re-establish themselves to some extent and in my opinion that is a job well done here.
