All fans of classic AOR will be impressed with their songs and sound.

For those familiar with their debut (see review in the Reissues section of this issue), the sophomore effort from Sweden's Coastland Ride shows them in sublime form. Although very much still indulged in Westcoast AOR bliss, this recording exceeds its predecessor in all respects. The album flaunts an updated (and slightly heavier) sound, bigger production, better songs and last but not least, superior musicianship. Everything expected from this band is represented with surprises aplenty.

Listeners will immediately notice the updated keyboard/drum sounds (lost are the dated DX7 patches and mechanical, Simmons-like drums) along with more robust vocal harmonies. Although 'Act Of Faith (One Million Reasons)' gives insight as to what lies ahead, by the time the chorus of 'Wait' hits, the talent of this group really comes to the fore. Although Coastland Ride would benefit from using an outside producer to truly catapult the band to a new level, 'Top Of The World' is an amazing development in their songwriting, sound and musicianship; all points that will make waiting for their next installment difficult. As the age-old cliché states, "three's a charm" and I firmly believe Coastland Ride are on the cusp of an absolute breakthrough.

'Made Up My Mind' is a splendid song of positivity encased in simplicity. Fans of the band 7th Heaven will notice the similarity and will devour this with alacrity. 'Save You From Yourself' successfully juxtaposes a light, breezy verse with a dark and brooding bridge/chorus. They get even more daring on ‘Jericho Falls’. This tune does more or less the opposite than the former comprising a dark, spoken word verse followed with a wonderful melodic bridge/chorus. 'Sandra' and 'Lodestar' both boast a fun, bouncy and retro feel that would even make the genius of Freddie Mercury envious.

Not being privy to this band before reviewing this and the re-released debut, 'Top Of The World' is an album worth adding to your collection. All fans of classic AOR will be impressed with their songs and sound which is absolutely the most authentic since the bands of that era. Standout tracks include (but not limited to) the following: 'Wait,' 'Made Up My Mind,' 'Sandra,' 'Strange Confusion' and 'Nail Me To The Cross.' It comes highly recommended from me…
