Annoying? Frustrating? Or even clever?

Annoying? Frustrating? Or even clever, these are some of the words that have been used to describe Gothenburg‘s Dead By April. For pop fans there’s way too much screaming going on and for fans of the metal core genre the music is simply far too twee to be taken seriously. That maybe the case, but surely there’s something clever about fusing two extremely different genres of music.

The thudding riffs, breakneck kick drums are all present and correct - Jacob Hellner and Stefan Glaumann the team behind Rammstein have seen to that - but the fine tuning has come with the addition of new vocalist Zandro Santiago who makes the band sound like a metal core version of the Back Street Boys. Add a few Linkin Park inspired piano loops to run alongside the sugar coated choruses generated by Santiago’s slick refrains and you’ve manufactured a sound that is commercial and appealing to the masses but can be enjoyed by the more discerning metal fan.

What’s not to like? Well plenty really. Firstly it does sound a little contrived and synthetic and secondly the album becomes repetitive with many songs relying heavily on the prescribed formula. Save for the title track - an out and out lighter waving boy band ballad minus the screaming and the slick commerciality of ‘When You Wake Up’ – the songs stick to the heavy verses with Jimmie Strimmel’s screamed vocals before breaking into the harmony laden commercial chorus courtesy of Santiago. The most memorable examples of this come on the excellent opener ‘Dreaming’, ‘Real and True’ and the ‘Lost’ a powerhouse screamcore anthem.

‘Incomparable’ may be a step up from the band’s self-titled debut but it certainly won’t appeal to everyone. It may be clever and could well sell by the truckload but in their own way isn’t Dead by April as contrived as the many reality show acts that perch some way above them in the charts.
