The first essential purchase of 2012.

Hellspray first came together in their native Sweden in 2005 and save for a couple of well received EP’s ‘Part Of The Solution’ is their debut full length release. It’s been well worth the wait because this is one of the best metal debuts I’ve heard in a long, long time.

The Hellspray sound is an amalgam of Classic British Metal and European Power Metal mixed with a smidgeon of Trash as well as a plentiful supply of Hard Rock dynamics. They’ve then given this molten mix a contemporary spin, the end result being a sound that is fresh, vibrant and exciting and quite simply it just rocks your socks off! The whole band are a tight as nails from the dual guitar attack of Mattias Rydell and Janusz Fursa to the pummelling rhythm section that is Nilo Kovacic (Bass) and Johan Häll (Drums). The ace in pack for me though is vocalist Anders Moberg whose distinctive bark would be equally suited to bluesy hard rock. You therefore get something very different from say the Halford ‘scream’ or the Dickinson ‘air raid siren’ and it really adds another welcome dimension to their overall sound. That said Anders still manages a couple of well placed growls to keep you young ‘uns interested!

A fresh approach to melodic metal is all well and good but you’ve got to have the songs to pull it off. I’m happy to say that ‘Part Of The Solution’ delivers with 10 absolutely killer tunes. They’re all of such high quality that it’s difficult to single out a favourite. Could it be the opening track ‘Spineless’ that blasts out the speakers in a cacophony of guitars and drums that’s a bit like Dio’s ‘Stand Up And Shout’ on steroids! or maybe it’s the immense Sabbath style riff running through ‘Count Your Blessings? It might be the Maiden inspired gallop of ‘Mr Hyde’ or the more commercial tones of ‘Favourite Game’? Or better still is it the almost thrash feel of album closer ‘Morphine’? Truth be told I love them all!

Take it from me this band is a little bit special and if they continue in this vein I really do feel they could be destined to become another force in European Metal. So if no nonsense, kick ass melodic metal is your bag then make this the first essential purchase of 2012.
