Excellent vocals highlighted by a million dollar mix.

Despite my rather rugged exterior people who know me will tell you that I have a very soft spot for a wide range of styles, not necessarily all within the rock music spectrum. Anyone who finds former American Idol star Kelly Clarkson appealing will find comfort in the fact that 'Stronger' follows a familiar musical blueprint and pretty much continues from where 2009's 'All I Ever Wanted' left off. If I'm honest the album is far more pop than rock but that has never been an issue for me having once worshipped at the altar of Abba back in the 70s.

The names of the songwriters and musicians mentioned in the CD booklet are all unfamiliar and actually none of the artists who contributed to the previous album are involved this time round. This is a fact I find surprising as many of the song structures are quite similar. Of the regular album's 13 tracks only 3 could be considered as ballads and the uptempo nature of the remainder creates something of instant fix for the listener and within only 2 or 3 spins I was singing along......in my head of course! 'Mr Know It All' is rather an odd choice for an opener as the pacing is not as energetic as the likes of 'What Doesn't Kill You', 'You Love Me' or 'I Forgive You' but this is an insignificant aside as the song is still as addictive as your favourite tube of Pringles. Admittedly the instrumentation is generally computer generated, the artificial drum sound being particularly noticeable, but this is another feature that can be forgiven due to the quality of the material.

Kelly Clarkson's excellent vocals are highlighted by a million dollar mix which is what you would expect from an artist near the top of one of the world's biggest record company's rosters. The deluxe version of 'Stronger' contains 4 bonus tracks and all are just as strong (especially 'Alone'), with memorable hooks and melodies throughout, even the countryfied 'Don't You Wanna Stay', a duet with Jason Aldean. The CD is choc full of songs worthy of radio play and I can imagine sales figures probably topping all the other releases included in this issue of the magazine added together.
I know there are many genres of rock music available to us all but CDs such as 'Stronger' are guilty pleasures that everyone will admit to resorting to every now and again.
