For lovers of melodic rock, this hits the spot.

Michael Thompson is a guitar virtuoso who has been on the scene a long while. Following the classic album ‘How Long’ released in 1988, he has now released ‘Future Past’ again under the Michael Thompson Band moniker and is now blessed with the vocals of Larry King (Soleil Moon). The band also includes the talented Khari Parker on drums and Alan Berliant on bass.

The album kicks off with an upbeat and optimistic riff to the song ‘High Times’, a brief verse straight to a big hook with a husky lead vocal and near hysterical backing vocals. This is slightly formulaic but also great stuff with the solo continuing the atmosphere, adding to and not taking away from the song. The next song ‘Can´t Be Right’ is more contemporary, again with Larry King excelling on vocals. I would classify him as a Graham Bonnet type of singer with various gears to his voice resulting in tremendous power and range. The guitar comes in again very smooth and relevant to the song, with drums and keyboards upfront - this really is a group effort. The title track is more reflective and has a more 80´s vibe to it and builds up slowly to a climatic solo which confirms Michael Thompson is in the Satriani/Vai league. ‘Here I Am’ is a great track and reminded me of Magnum´s ‘Lonely Night’ in the way it builds up. There are some slower tracks such as ‘When You Love Someone’ and ‘End Game’, the former with a mind-blowing solo and the later with a very frenetic chorus; this album has literally something for everyone.

‘Can´t Miss’, the penultimate track, picks up the pace with some nice modernistic touches to a very classic AOR song, expertly played and the singer very much making the song. The final track, ‘Fight For Your Life’, starts with a very harmonic and guitar backed vocal inevitably ending with the big hook, the big dramatic chorus and the big solo.

This album can´t really be faulted; in a different time, this would be bothering the US album chart and the UK one given half a chance. For lovers of melodic rock, this hits the spot.
