A magnificent album.

Klaus Luley was singer guitarist with German Hard Rock gods Craaft who released 3 studio albums between 1986 -1992 and one live album in 2003. Before that he was a member of AOR gods Tokyo who released three brilliant albums from 1981-83 and another with a completely different line up.

So after years of apparent silence Mr Luley is back, has it been worth the wait? You bet! This is on a par with anything he has been involved with previously, taking the best bits of Tokyo and Craaft and blending them with a modern production and most importantly killer songs.

The voice is instantly recognisable as Can’t Live Without You opens the album in style as catchy as anything I have heard this year with a real commercial hook and chorus which lays the foundation for the rest of the album. Mountain Of Love is next and is even better than the opener! Just as catchy as the previous song opening with a very west coast feel keyboard but with a more punchy sound and this is a brilliant opening one two.

Slippin Away is pure Craaft - catchy hard rock with an up-tempo feel and again very commercial which gives way to the power ballad ‘Livin’ In The Night’ which takes me back to those great melodic rock songs of the mid 80s that charted everywhere except the UK!! Great song with some lovely guitar throughout.

Brave move next as we have an updated version of the hit single that was TOKYO. The quality of this song is not in doubt as any fan of melodic rock will already be aware. So is this any different to the original? A resounding yes this is a much harder version more akin to the Craaft work rather than the west coast sound of Tokyo but an excellent rework all the same with much stronger vocals. Tokyo merges into Don’t Wanna See Your Face which after the keys intro gallops along at a nice mid tempo with a familiar melody which annoyingly I cannot place but the song itself reminds me of the kind of stuff MacAuley Schenker Group were peddling back in the day.

If I have a criticism of this album it would be the thin sound of the guitar solos which are slightly at odds with the pompish rocking of the songs in general but it is a very mild criticism and with songs as strong as these it can be overlooked quite easily.

Higher is more in the Tokyo mould with an almost dance feel to it and keyboard fills which work nicely and in this particular song the guitar solo is short but the sound not as thin as elsewhere. Once again the commercial potential of this song is huge. More fluid guitar opens Here in My Arms which wouldn’t sound out of place on any of the recent Europe albums which is high praise indeed! The hooks keep coming with Still Got A Long Way To Go just as catchy as all the others, Take Me Today is pure pomp heaven, opening with stabbing keyboards and dancing along on a funky beat and it’s another one that I have been humming for days now.

When The Night Comes Down closes a magnificent album in moody fashion with a synth riff over a steady drum beat with guitar fills giving way to a huge hook and epic chorus a beautiful mid tempo song that leaves me reaching for the replay button as this is a truly superb melodic rock album which whilst being immediately listenable does not fade with repeated plays. I cannot remember the last album I heard with so many potential singles on it. If this was 1987 this would be Multi-Platinum and Klaus Luley a superstar. As it is 2012 we have to be thankful that this music is still being made and in such high quality.
