There is much to like about this release.

When our esteemed Reviews Editor emailed my list of reviews for this issue and I saw the name Andi Starr, I wondered if this would turn out to be a third rate hair metal has been or wannabe frontman’s shot at a solo album. I’m happy to say that the reality is completely different from what I expected. Andi Starr is a gifted singer/songwriter from Portland, Oregon with a voice of pure velvet who has often been compared to the likes of Tori Amos, Aimee Mann and The Cranberries. ‘The World Will Follow’ is Andi’s third studio album and is the culmination of ten years of writing, recording and performing that has seen her break free from the shackles of her strict religious upbringing.

The songs on this album have simple but effective arrangements and instrumentation that allow the vocals to slowly draw you in and involve you in the music. Andi, much like Kate Bush, possesses a voice that other beers just can’t reach reducing mere mortals like myself to a quivering wreck! It has an almost nymph like quality as she moves from clear and beautiful tones to breathless and sexy to fragile and crackling with emotion in a way that is so compelling that every syllable reaches inside you, grabs your heart and just won’t let go.

The album benefits from a warm, uncluttered, organic production and is made up of mellow ethereal acoustic guitar driven songs like ‘The World Will Follow’ ‘Little Bird’ and the shuffle groove of ‘Happy Ballad’ all of which feature some stylish electric and lap steel guitar work courtesy of Supertramp’s Jesse Siebenberg. These are interspersed with piano led ballads in the form of ‘Ticket-Taker’ and ‘Delilah’s Response’ where the latter really brings Kate Bush to mind in terms of the song structure and vocal delivery.

I do have a couple of gripes though. It’s really about how the album ends more than anything else. Here you get an acoustic version of the title track and an instrumental piece called ‘Water Rising’. In an album with a total running length of only 40 minutes do we really need two versions of the same song, even if the acoustic treatment lets Andi’s voice grip you even more? And whilst ‘Water Rising’ is a nice instrumental piece I would like to have heard Andi’s voice over the top of it.

These minor gripes aside there is much to like about this release. So if you are a fan of any of the artists I’ve mentioned or you like music with a real emotional connection then I would urge you to pick up a copy of this album. I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed.
