Perhaps I expected ‘A Different Kind of Album’?

I’ve waited with baited breath for this album release but my enthusiasm waned somewhat over the preceding couple of weeks, especially following the release of ‘Tattoo’ – one of the most uninspiring, bland songs I’ve ever heard. Now I know that VH have had a couple of stinkers on albums over the years, but never as singles. To have this as the first new release in over two decades was just unfathomable. When you realise that several of the songs are in fact from demos done in 1970, it makes you wonder - just how much thought and effort has gone into this album? Don’t get me wrong – I don’t hate it, in fact it’s growing on me, but hardly any journalists were sent promo copies to review before the release – were the band worried about how it would be received? There certainly was enough hype, considering there were even posters advertising it on Wigan North Western station – something I’ve never seen before for a rock album.

‘A Different Kind of Truth’ is a far more – dare I say – mature album for the band. Not so many songs about shagging perhaps, but certainly just as much fun. For all I think that ‘Tattoo’ is a complete waste of effort, songs like ‘China Town’ – by far the best track on the album for me, and ‘As Is’ are totally back to form. ‘Stay Frosty’ is, I guess, the ‘Ice Cream Man’ or ‘Happy Trails’ of the album, with ‘You And Your Blues’ being the only other weak track.

I can’t say that Michael Anthony isn’t missed, because he really is, but Wolfie isn’t too far off the mark in filling those shoes and all in all, does a good job. Alex has never been the best drummer in the world, but he seems to have been taking direction from a lot of the heavier players over the last 20 something has his brother. Eddie must be asking Wolfgang for tips on what to listen to as he’s playing like a man half his age with all the enthusiasm we never thought we’d see again.

If I only listen to Dave, it’s like he’s got his mojo back, but watching the videos, I think he needs to stop dressing like a farmer – that’s not what we signed up for! Sorry, but a flat cap and dungarees do not a rock star make – bring back the spandex, hell, wear a wig if you have to – we want our Diamond Dave back!

I’d like to say this is will be in my top albums for 2012, but I’m really not sure yet. This coming from a woman who named her son after the world’s greatest front man, as was. Perhaps I expected ‘A Different Kind of Album’?
