Not a bad album, per se, but for sure their market isn't here.

A bit of a mixed bag this one as The Dogs Divine are capable of switching from very heavy to mellow acoustic within the framework of this, their second album.

Hailing from Springfield, Illinois the album kicks off with a one-two whammy of heavy, grungy down-tuned guitars and raw, rasping throaty vocals as opener ‘Dogs’ has an ‘Us against the world’ lyrical insinuation, almost White Zombie-like, whilst following hot on its metaphorical heels ‘Overnight Sensation’ with its chugging pounding rhythm is in Phil Anselmo Pantera-era territory. With their motto of ‘It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog’, you kinda get the angle they’re coming from with this album. ‘FDLF’, heavy, pounding and full of profanity (guess the letters) has vocalist Tommy Hart sounding like Tyler from Dogs D’Amour and has a raging but short solo from guitarist Karl Von Heilman with plenty of tremolo rhythm throughout whilst ‘Brand New Addiction’ has more raging guitar on the intro leading to staccato, stabbing riffs, pounding drums courtesy of Jeremiah Ross and noticeable fretted bass courtesy of vocalist Tommy’s brother Jim Hart.

Soil’s bass player Tim King heard a demo of ‘Hell Wouldn’t Have Me’ (heavy driving riffs with a short but neat solo) and decided to sign them to Mortal Music Inc. based on this one song. Interestingly though, decent rocker ‘Gypsy King’ is very countrified with a Jon Bon Jovi ‘Blaze Of Glory’ feel on the intro incorporating acoustic slide guitar and upright bass amongst the staccato riffs with Tommy Hart laying claim to be the Gypsy King. Similarly ‘One For The Ages’ is a brooding rocker with a slight Daughtry feel and you also have a short instrumental called ‘Gussie’ (a tribute to Tommy and Jim Hart’s late grandfather Gussie Cary) featuring an acoustic guitar intro with violin. Mainstream heavy rocker ‘Join The Crowd’ has more Phil Anselmo comparisons with a psychedelic mid-section but the two interesting tracks for me are ‘One And Only’ that features Tommy Hart indulging in a Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit) rapping style with added profanity atop a heavy riff style not too dissimilar to ‘Rollin’. Bizarrely you find yourself singing along and nodding in unison to the lyric ‘Make way, make way for the one and only’. The wah-wah solo incorporating scales is a mad fit to a mad song. And then they also cover the amusing Queen classic ‘I’m In Love With My Car’ sung incidentally by car nut Roger Taylor from their 1975 classic ‘A Night At The Opera’ multi-million selling album. Tommy sings it in a Spike (Quireboys) style in an attempt to mimic Roger.

To think they’ve toured with Skid Row and Ratt suggests that somebody out there believes in them but there isn’t too much for regular Fireworks / Rocktopia readers to get excited about. Not a bad album, per se, but for sure their market isn’t here.
