Well-picked and accurate statement of one of this country's most underrated musicians.

As a singer-songwriter John Miles is probably best known for a clutch of hit singles in the mid to late 1970s, notably with the sumptuous ‘Music’ and the catchy ‘Highfly’ from his 1976 debut album ‘Rebel’; both of which charted in the USA. Miles continued to write and record solo albums up to the late 1990s but it’s his first four albums (the aforementioned ‘Rebel’ along with ‘Stranger In The City,’ ‘Zaragon’ and ‘More Miles Per Hour’) that he had the most success with. Miles has a wonderful voice and an understated but gripping guitar sound. This welcome collection rounds up his best known singles culled from those first four albums, which have also been reissued by Cherry Red Records in the past few years. The 17 tracks that are on offer are here represents a musician who has his own style and a versatile way of playing from the progressive ‘House On The Hill’ to toe-tapping and enjoyably funky ‘Slow Down’ to the dulcet ‘Remember Yesterday.’ Many of the songs are very typical of the time such as the poppy ‘Manhattan Skyline’ but for every one of those there is a sturdy rocker like the excellent ‘Can’t Keep A Good Man Down’.

‘Decca Singles’ is a well-picked and accurate statement of one of this country’s most underrated musicians. Since the mid 1980s Miles has been an integral member of Tina Turners’ touring band which at its best (i.e. 1990s ‘Foreign Affair’ tour which at the time was the most successful tour of Europe by any artist) also included drummer Jack Bruno, guitarist James Ralston, pianist Kenny Moore (RIP,) percussionists Timmy Cappello and Ollie Marland and bassist Bon Fiet. As well as the odd sporadic tour with the semi-retired Turner, Miles is still an active musician notably with the European Night Of The Promos and various other musical endeavours.
