The Swedes' fifth album.

“OK, have we got about an hour’s music? A suitably bombastic intro? A choir? A BBC sound effects album? Some narrative twaddle about elves and dragons? A co-opted female singer? And a bloke who can sing in a Really Deep Voice? Fab! Let’s go make a record.”

OK, it’s probably not that bad. Maybe I’m just getting even grumpier in my old age, but back in 2005 I remember seeing Gothenburg’s Dragonland at The Thirteenth Day and was rather underwhelmed by their one-dimensional material. I can remember guitarist Olof Mörck grinning like a loon right through their set, but that’s about all. Six years and two albums later, I don’t really feel like revising my opinion.

‘Under The Grey Banner’ is the Swedes’ fifth album, and is yet another drawn from the seemingly bottomless well of middle-of-the-road Middle Earth power metal fantasy concept outings. Kitted out with all the swords, sorcery and goblins you can shake a stick at songs like ‘Throne Of Bones’, ‘The Trials Of Mount Farnor’ and ‘Lady Of Goldenwood’ gallop past like Shadowfax, although leave precious little magic in their wake. To be fair, the musicianship is top-notch and I’ve no doubt Mörck and his bandmates Jonas Hedigert (vocals), Elias Holmlid (keyboards), Jesse Lindskog (guitars), Anders Hammer (bass) and Morten Lowe Sorensen (drums) have their (metal) hearts in the right places, but this is so drab and so derivative it’s going to have to fight hard to be heard amongst the plethora of similar-sounding albums that 2011 has thrown up; and 2012 will almost certainly continue to throw up. Furthermore, the album does commit the unforgivable crime of not having a single memorable song; it’s a bit like the aural equivalent of those Dr Who creatures The Silence – the ones you forget as soon as you can no longer see them.

It is a very nice album, but was metal ever meant to be nice? I have to admit that ‘Under The Grey Banner’’s biggest surprise is that it only runs for an hour. It feels considerably longer, and that’s despite knowing that the elves will follow me into the storm ...
