Worth having if you're a fan of either musician.

The original plan was to have Carmine Appice team up with Rick Derringer but his schedule wouldn’t allow it so it was suggested by co-producer Greg Hampton that Appice team up with the legendary Pat Travers. After all, Carmine had previously jammed at a NAMM show and everybody knows how good Travers is. Travers was keen to be onboard so the guitarist and drummer teamed up. Over the course of nine days, the pair cooked up some original songs and created the 2004 album ‘It Takes A Lot Of Balls’ which many Travers fans believed was a return to form. The pair went on tour and took revered bassist TM Stevens with them and during the road jaunt they recorded a set at the House Of Blues down in Myrtle Beach in South Carolina on 26 September, 2004.

The trio created a fantastic live performance and naturally there’s a lot of self-indulgence but there’s some good tunes on offer with songs taken mostly from the studio album although there is a rather curious version of the icky Rod Stewart song ‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?.’ There’s a lot of blues and a raw and edgy sound as best heard on the catchy ‘Turn Me On.’ Travers fretboard wizardry is a joy to hear and both his and Appice’s voices are in top shape. It’s a strong release although not as good as Travers’ own ‘Go For What You Know’ but as it’s a CD/DVD combo it’s certainly worth picking up. The fades out after the songs are a little tedious but it’s still a fun CD and the DVD features the full 11 song concert that’s also on the CD which makes it a good purchase. There’s obvious chemistry between the trio and the close up shots on the DVD show just how good the three of them are together.

Sold as a digi pack collection with a bonus song called ‘Keep On Rocking’ on the CD, ‘Boom Boom…’ is worth having if you’re a fan of either musician.
