A promising debut.

Who would have thought that when Blues first collided headlong into Rock ‘n’ Roll all those decades ago to create the basis of Hard Rock as we know it that it would still be such a popular musical force as it is today with the likes of Joe Bonamassa firing new life into a treasured music form.

Nitro Ville are the latest band to climb onto the Blues platform  and having formed in London in 2010 they’ve wasted no time in writing and recording their debut album with ‘Can’t Stop What’s Comin’’  bearing the fruits of their labours.  While not doing anything particularly ground breaking, NitroVille do deliver their own take on the much loved genre.  Clocking in at the harder edged end of the Blues spectrum, NitroVille tip their caps towards the boogie riffs of AC/DC with a hint of the sleazy, dirty Blues of the likes of Rose Tattoo with a liberal sprinkling of Skynyrd-esq Southern Rock for good measure to produce a no frills, no messing, foot stompin’ feel good Rock’n’Roll record.

While the riffs and fretwork of lead guitarist Kurt Michael Boeck would be impressive enough on their own, it`s lead singer and discovery of the year Tola Lamont that really sets this album on fire.  With a style that combines the full force of Chrissy Steel with the gritty edge of Dale Krantz from the Rossington Collins Band and a touch of Heart’s Anne Wilson, it`s hard to believe that this lady wasn`t born on the banks of the Mississippi delta.  Hearing a voice like this really does restore your faith in the music business and someone who can sing with such primal passion rather than caterwaul in X Factor fashion is a real treat.

‘Can’t Stop What’s Comin’’ is certainly a promising debut. Opener ‘Cheating The Hangman’ and ‘Tell It Like It Is’ rock hard while ‘Dust Devil’ smoulders seductively.  ‘Cuts To the Bone’ with some atmospheric slide work from Boeck delivers a fine slab of London style Southern Rock. Undoubtedly NitroVille will really come alive on stage in a dark, smoky club (well maybe not so smoky these days following the smoking ban!!) and will certainly be well worth checking out live but for now ‘Can’t Stop What’s Comin’’ will do just nicely. It shows a lot of potential and if they can develop their song writing further and build on the solid foundations of their debut then the chances are you`ll be hearing a lot more of NitroVille in the future.
