A heartfelt and terrific read.

When you look back across the career of Glenn Hughes, you find names like funk-rock pioneers Trapeze, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Gary Moore and more recently Black Country Communion. That’s pretty damn impressive, then you add the more cult projects like Phenomena and the stunning Hughes/Thrall pairing, another two albums with Tony Iommi, Hughes/Turner Project… not to mention the sessions he’s done – so many in fact, that if I listed them all here, I’d go over my word limit. Oh yeah, he’s also recorded a collection of solo work that dwarfs most acts. Yet only recently with Black Country Communion has he started to be appreciated outside of his cult following, of which I’m a proud member.

As luck would have it, Glenn had been working on an autobiography for some time, and BCC’s success has helped him reach new fans who will no doubt be staggered by what they read. Glenn’s story is that of a true survivor.Glenn tells his story with warmth and humour – his work with Joel McIver to produce this book ensures that it reads as if Glenn is speaking to you directly. He doesn’t pull any punches and honesty is the key word in reciting his experiences. The results are equal parts amusing and disturbing.

Without spoiling all the anecdotes, what started out as a ‘so near, so far’ experience with Trapeze is turned on it’s head when Glenn joins Deep Purple. Suddenly it’s all limousines, private jets and drugs, which ultimately leads to his downfall. It’s not all doom and gloom, there are some great stories along the way and what I really liked is, unlike most autobiographies, this one features other people weighing in with their own paragraphs about what is going on – names like David Coverdale, Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Halford, Tony Iommi, Joe Bonamassa and Kevin Shirley as well as people who were close to Glenn or worked with him at the time. This other perspective adds to the honesty as you hear what Glenn thought he was doing under the influence, along with how others perceived him.

There’s plenty of glitz and glamour in the Purple heyday, hanging out with John Bonham, Robert Plant, David Bowie and numerous others and it shows how far Glenn fell when his addiction took over. What follows is the story of fighting his way back to sobriety and success, but in true to life style, explaining how many struggles there were along the way.

With so much to say from personal experience, Glenn’s book is utterly engaging to a devoted fan like myself and fascinating to a casual fan who lost track of him since Deep Purple. It’s a roller coaster of success and failure and his willingness to openly deal with his personal problems and musical hits and misses make it a heartfelt and terrific read.
