Their most cohesive set of songs for many a (desert?) moon.

At the time of writing it’s still debatable whether this album will see the light of day, due to the court injunction served by ex-vocalist Jack Russell. Russell is currently in the process of suing his former band mates over the use of the name Great White, after being ousted from the band in late 2011 partly due to his inability to commit to the band’s scheduled tour dates following a bout of illness. Russell’s replacement is XYZ vocalist Terry Ilous, (last heard on the excellent debut album from Bridger), who initially began fronting the band as a short-term replacement, joining the long-standing nucleus of guitarist Mark Kendall, guitarist/keyboardist Michael Lardie and drummer Audie Desbrow, along with newer member, bassist Scott Snyder. ‘Elation’ is the first studio album in three years, the title chosen to reflect the feeling of the bands members with the new line-up.

In all honesty Great White aren’t creating anything new with this release, and few should expect them to do so, this album simply follows on from where the ‘Back To The Rhythm’ and ‘Rising’ comeback albums left off, and sails the Blues-Rock waters the band have always been known for. But the addition of Terry Ilous seem to have given the band a whole new lease of life, his vocals here are impeccable, he keeps his own style and doesn’t attempt to be a Jack Russell sound-alike and he has slotted in perfectly and sounds like he’s been singing with the band his whole life, which has resulted in the whole band sounding like they’ve been totally rejuvenated.

Rollicking opener ‘(I’ve Got) Something For You’ sets out their intentions from the off, it’s the most up-tempo GW song in quite a while, with a nod to Aerosmith. Elsewhere, the album is chock full of the brooding Blues-Rock anthems we’ve come to expect, such as ‘Feelin’ So Much Better’, ‘Resolution’ and ‘Heart Of A Man’, and the more up-tempo stylish numbers like ‘Just For Tonight’ and the awesome ‘Shotgun Willie’s’ – possibly the track that nods towards the Eighties heyday the most. The mid-tempo Blues-based pieces like ‘Love Train’ and ‘Promise Land’ are the most intense numbers on offer, while the ballads ‘Hard To Say Goodbye’ and the quite wonderful ‘Love Is Enough’ are the best ballads GW have committed to record in years. And the closing ‘Complicated’ is a Faces and Stones style bar-room honky-tonk rocker that makes you want to hit the play button again.

In short Great White have put together their most cohesive set of songs for many a (desert?) moon, and released an album that can easily rank alongside the likes of ‘Once Bitten…’, ‘…Twice Shy’, and my personal favourite ‘Psycho City.’ All we need now are some U.K. dates, and I’ll be a very happy boy indeed.

Wow! Is this a review of the same Elation release I've been listening too for the last 3 weeks? Stating that this release is on par with "Once bitten.., "Desert Moon", and/or "Psycho City"?!?! What???!?!?! Seriously???!?!?! Did you really listen to this album continously? I'm not buying any of that. This release for the most part is Great White lite and has no real lift off points. The musical journey is fairly bland and there is nothing even remotely as good as "Desert Moon" or even "Big Goodbye"..etc. It will do nothing and will simply gather dust on my shelf as a bookend. I've seriously put G.W out to pasture. RIP.
