If you are after a something AORish, this album will definitely be of interest.

Joey Summer is a multi-talented singer and musician of Greek descent and born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He has just released a solo album which is in effect a concept album based on the themes of paradise and love entitled ‘One Bite From Paradise’. Although responsible for vocals, guitars, bass and keyboards, Joey has left room for a number of guest musicians, most notably in the form of Tommy Denander (Alice Cooper, Jimi Jamison).

Joey’s guitar work is top-drawer and based very much around harmonised short solos with the songs mainly set against heavily orchestrated keyboards. His vocals are very listenable; not overly strong but more atmospheric (think Darren Wharton’s vocal style with Dare). The music style is very much AOR verging on pomp at points but with some metal touches; if you like the Iron Maiden gallop songs you will like a number of tracks on this album.

Starting off with an ominous spoken introduction with lots of echo and a deep voice (a bit like Vin Diesel in Pitch Black!), the album kicks off into top gear with the title track and its soaring riff and hyperbolic chorus. The next track, ‘Running Through The Night’, continues the mysterious tinge to the album with another rousing chorus and up front keyboards. ‘No Margin For Error’ which commences in a ballad form before turning into a keyboard-led stomp showcases Summer’s deft guitar work and solid vocal work.

Midway through the album, a plaintive piano opening with a pop based approach to the song ‘From Miles Away’ is a well-placed break from the energetic songs that precede it and has thoughtful vocal harmonies beefing up the chorus. A classic solo with heavy use of a harmoniser turns this song into one of the standout tracks. Out of the following tracks, ‘Heaven To Earth’ and ‘It’s Only Your Love’ are of a similar vein and Summer again excels in them; perhaps a suggestion that this quieter AOR style is his niche. Near the end of the album, ‘The Prize Of Love’ picks up the pace and has a great piano and guitar duel (not often heard) and yet another spirited chorus with full-on backing vocals and a soaring guitar play-out. The final track, ‘No One’s Gonna Hurt Me Anymore’, which guests Tommy Denander, is a solid mainstream pop/rock affair.

So if you are after a something AORish with a bit of a story and smooth guitar work, this album will definitely be of interest.
