A true masterpiece of melodic rock music.

Harry Hess (for tis he!) is the ex-singer of the magnificent Harem Scarem and this, his second solo release, is far closer to the sound of his former band than his earlier effort, ‘Just Another Day’. All the usual reference points are present here, hints of classic Def Leppard and 80s Bryan Adams (particularly on opener ‘Living In Yesterday’) excellent vocals and hooks and all benefiting from a sympathetic production.

As a lover of Harem Scarem I have to say I am thrilled with this album, which is packed full of classy melodic rock tunes and a host of potential hit singles. ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’ could be a Foo Fighters single with a very modern vibe but still true to the signature sound we associate with Hess.

There isn’t a duff track on this CD and I find myself wondering how this man is not better known? He has all the elements required for success: great songs, catchy as hell choruses and memorable hooks, great musicianship … and he’s pretty hot too!! Everything here has that USA summer radio hit sound going on and whilst the sound is quite modern there are enough classic elements to make me think back to the late 80’s and that golden era of quality AOR music and hit singles.

‘I Live For You’ is the best ballad Def Leppard never wrote and is vocally very close to the Mutt Lange sound that made both Leppard and Bryan Adams the dominant forces they were in the 80s and early 90s! ‘I Don’t Wanna Want You’ even ventures modern pop and could easily be picked up by a boy band or the likes of Avril Lavigne etc. with its punchy up-tempo beat and catchy chorus. I also found myself comparing the closing track to The Goo Goo Dolls best work.

At 39 mins long this album just flies by and inevitably I am reaching for the replay button. If you haven’t heard Harry Hess before then I recommend you move heaven and earth to get this CD and once you have fallen in love with it, there is an absolute goldmine of earlier works that you can discover too!

Overall this is a gem of a melodic rock album and deserves to be a huge hit. I can’t find anything negative to say about this CD - if you loved Harem Scarem (and if you didn’t – why not?) and you find yourself yearning for those far off days then this is an album you will love.

Highly recommended and hugely enjoyable; a true masterpiece of melodic rock music. Don’t miss this!
