Another very welcome addition to the Empires Of Eden catalogue.

Album number three from this melodic/power metal project serves up another dozen hook laden tracks and looks set to be as well received as its two predecessors that were acclaimed by the metal community.  Empires Of Eden is the brainchild of former Dungeon and Paindivision guitarist and shredder extraordinaire, Australian Stu Marshall, who has, in the tradition of Avantasia and Ayreon, gone truly global in his search for some of the most powerful and well respected vocalists to lend their talents to his creative vision. ‘Channelling the Infinite’ follows on from 2009’s ‘Songs Of War And Vengeance’ and ‘Reborn In Fire’ from the following year. Marshall is full of praise for his collaborators, proclaiming that he is “overwhelmed by the power and emotion of the vocal performances that these amazing singers have brought to the album. It’s pushed my playing to levels I never thought possible and has created the most well-rounded release I have ever been involved with. Writing for these incredible artists is a dream come true and the finished product has actually exceeded my expectations”. With such unashamed enthusiasm the contents within ‘Channelling The Infinite’ certainly have a lot to live up to, and thankfully it delivers the goods from start to finish.

The names involved this time around include Rob Rock, Steve Grimmett, Mike DiMeo (Riot/ Masterplan), Carlos Zema (Outworld) and UDO amongst several others. In a twist on the usual ‘guest musician’ format Marshall allows the singers free rein in regard to the lyrics and vocal melodies, tailoring the musical backdrop to their own particular strengths and style. His own playing is incredibly slick and his uncompromising approach runs the gamut from bone crunching riffs to spectacular solos that shine out amidst the complex arrangements. There is never really a dull moment here but some of the highlights include UDO going hell for leather on the full throttle ‘Hammer Down’, a track that is later included as a bonus version incorporating five other vocalists with each taking their turn in the spotlight. The unmistakable wail of Rob Rock kicks things off with the melodramatic ‘Cry Out’ and Carlos Zema takes the lead on ‘Cyborg’, providing a colossal chorus to go with the bombastic and yet well-crafted backdrop where Marshall once again excels.

There is a certainly an audience for these star studded endeavours and given their increasing longevity and appeal Empires of Eden are well on the way to becoming power metals equivalent of the TSO. ‘Channelling The Infinite’ evidences that Marshall is far from running short of either quality material or special guests willing to come forward and makes for another very welcome addition to the Empires Of Eden catalogue.
