Excellent!

Another new name to me, 24Pesos are a four piece that play energetic blues influenced music. That could mean a whole manner of things, so I decided to simply play the CD and see what came out. The result was the bouncy and sublime 'Melon Man', an acoustic driven tune with a superb melody and a pounding drum beat. Okay, I'm sold… next!

24Pesos have released two prior albums, debuting in 2008 with 'The Boogie Worm' and following up with 2010's 'Busted, Broken and Blue'. This new effort was recorded live over the space of just two days to try and capture as much energy and spontaneity as possible - and it's worked a treat. After the initial excellence of 'Melon Man', 24Pesos pay tribute to a blues legend with 'Leadbelly', with a funky baseline underpinning Julian Burdock's first class smokey vocals. The group also boasts some fine harmonies with the rest of the group, Silas Maitland, Moz Gamble and Mike Connolly, and these are highlighted on 'Ain't Gonna Beg No More'.

All of the members put their stamp on this record - I love the vocals, the bass lines are fantastic, the percussion rock solid and the organ playing tasteful and effective. As well as being lead singer and chief song writer, Burdock's guitar and dobro playing is brilliant and drives along other choice cuts like 'Peace In The Valley'.

'Trying To Get Back To You' is more traditional blues with more great harmonies, and 'Walk Away' is as authentic as blues music gets. 'Did Your Daddy Wrong' has more of that great funky vibe, before the foot tapping title track grabs your attention. All eleven tracks are very well crafted and superbly produced by bass player Silas Maitland. I was very impressed by the energetic and unique take on what can be a very tired blues format - if you like the blues, you'll probably love 24Pesos.

If you think the blues can be a bit dull, I'd still advise you check out 24Pesos, because you will almost certainly re-evaluate your opinion. Excellent!
