A true classic.

Having been a fan of all three of their previous albums I was looking forward to this release but wow, I did not expect it to be this good. Every song here is instantly memorable and there are absolutely no fillers on this album. All the usual elements are here: huge hooks catchy riffs and memorable choruses. This is classic 80s hard rock but with a modern touch. The music is commercial and rocking at the same time (I avoid the word “heavy” as it always conjures images of Sabbath etc. for me)

There are so many reference points throughout this album yet Eclipse manage to retain their own signature sound. I can hear White Lion, Malmsteen (80s version), Gary Moore, Helloween, Europe, Whitesnake … the list is endless but the album is cohesive and uniquely Eclipse!

Opener Wake Me Up starts with a Dio-esque riff and builds to a very catchy chorus reminiscent of White Lion at their best and immediately it is noticeable how tight a musical unit these guys are. Aint Dead Yet is Malmsteen-esque but better than anything he has produced in the last 20 years with a twisting riff and fast flurries from the twin guitar axis of Erik Martensson and Magnus Henriksson. Battlegrounds nods at Over the Fields and Far Away period Gary Moore and yes, the guitar playing is comparable with the great man too.

The pace lets up with Bitter Taste, a beautiful ballad which starts with just voice and guitar then builds to a massive power chorus and soaring time change into a galloping rhythm that backs an awesome guitar solo before fading out on piano chords - simply breathtaking.

Falling Down is another up tempo rocker with a memorable chorus underpinned by excellent guitar work and the we are treated to stop start riffing of SOS which is another instant classic with a very modern sounding bridge and a chorus almost Linkin Park / Evanescence like but in a good way (don’t worry there is no rapping) with the sustained vocal that allows Erik Martensson to show off his vocal range.

Take Back the Fear is a fast rocker with excellent twin guitar work and now I am thinking Pretty Maids but again the song is clearly Eclipse. It’s amazing how the band have taken their influences and fused them into a recognisable and yet uniquely individual sound. Unspoken Heroes returns us to the commercial side of the band with the ‘they are they are unspoken heroes’ chorus lodged in my head since the first spin of this brilliant CD, definite single potential. And so to the second ballad, About to Break. Once again starting with guitar and vocals before building into a great hook and chorus. This is a great song again and would also be a possible single. After The End of The World rocks along in Europe style with another massive chorus and almost a lyrical sequel to The Final Countdown but without the keyboards.

I really cannot recommend this album highly enough. If you are a fan of classic 80s rock, scandi rock, or just great music then you simply have to hear this album. A true classic.
