Title

A must have album for all Fireworks and Rocktopia devotees.

David A. Saylor is a Spanish/American singer songwriter who has worked on many pop and west coast rock recordings over the years. However looking for a new challenge David decided to move to the UK in the early 80’s, where he made a name for himself fronting a hatful of pop and melodic rock bands. In 87 David co-founded the melodic rock act known as Push who at that time got a lot of big label attention, though sadly nothing came of this initial label enthusiasm. David switched his focus after this and wrote, produced and sang music in the Latin/Spanish style which garnered many plaudits and earned him a Grammy nomination. Fast forward to last year and those nice people at AOR BLVD Records Paul and Kelv, decided that it was high time the PushUK album demos saw the light of day and they promptly released them on CD for the first time. This has now neatly lead on to this solo album from Saylor.

And Mr. Saylor with this release has only gone and made the kind of album that I thought had long since bitten the dust. By this I mean a pure AOR record and one that the great Derek Oliver would call totally Pink and Fluffy. The CD itself is full of glorious keyboards, massive harmonies, big hooklines, heartfelt vocals and wonderful, wonderful songs. Oh and to top it all off everything apart from the odd vocal, has been recorded, played and produced by David himself. So now on to the songs, ‘Mystery Girl’ is just wonderful, with a big hard rocking riff, the hook is huge and it’s the kind of track just made for listening to on a long summer drive, with your sunglasses on and the windows of the car down to let the cool summer breeze in. ‘Inside Love’ reminds me of Survivor at their best, David’s vocals are warm and the chorus is instantly memorable and stays with you long after the song is over. ‘Hands To Heaven’ and title track ‘City Of Angels’ are both songs that all AOR lovers will want to hear time and again, as they fill your house with their melodic tones. ‘Think Of What Your Thinking’ and ‘I Don’t Want To Wait Anymore’ (a Tubes cover), again have all the hooks you could want and remind you of when this kind of music ruled the airwaves, with David once again showing just what a great melodic rock singer he is. Finishing things off is the mid paced duet with Suzie Ashby called ‘Where Do We Go From Here’, where the two singers nail the song and leave you wanting more as the CD finishes playing.

All that is left to say about this album is that they don’t usually make AOR like this anymore, which is a massive shame. A must have album for all Fireworks and Rocktopia devotees and well worth the pennies (available from www.aorboulevardrecords.com).
