A decent album with many classy moments.

Sylvan is a Prog band that by rights I should adore but I’ve never really found myself fully engaged with their style or ‘got’ what they were doing; it’s only been while listening to this extensive double CD that I’ve fathomed out why. There can be no argument that their musicianship is terrific and at times they construct and deliver some fine soundscapes but there’s not enough that’s memorable about what they do to make me want to return to their music on a regular basis. With the likes of Spock’s Beard and The Flower Kings there are themes and refrains that I find myself humming or even singing (much to the dismay of my work colleagues) at the drop of a hat, Sylvan’s material is perfectly pleasant while you’re listening to it but doesn’t leave the same lasting impression.

Another issue I have with them on this album is that at times they sound remarkably like modern Marillion with Marco Glühmann sounding like Steve Hogarth when using those extended wailing vocal passages so redolent of Marillion in recent times. Most of the highlights on the album are Jan Petersen’s guitar solos which owe a great deal to Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and Steve Rothery (Marillion), back in the early days when he was good.

The album consists of five ‘Chapters’, ‘The Fountain of Glow’, ‘Share The World with Me’, ‘The Words You Hide’, The Waters I Traveled (sic)’and ‘Farewell to Old Friends’ each in turn being sub-divided into multiple sections and to be fair to the band the music does flow seamlessly with no contrived links. Volker Söhl lays down some fine keyboard sounds, much in the style of Pink Floyd although he does get to shine with some delightful piano work on track two which is immediately followed by an extended and superbly melodic guitar solo. Sebastian Harnack’s bass on the last section of the opening track is simple but really effective with the band getting a little modern towards the end of this part. The drumming of Matthias Harder is wonderfully crisp and he never overplays his hand, choosing his moments carefully when to embellish.

Examples of the Marillion style are part four of ‘Share The World With Me’ and part four of ‘The Words You Hide’; play these to someone in a blind test and I reckon most would name them as Marillion songs. Part one of ‘The Words You Hide’ sees the band getting somewhat heavier than usual, bordering on Prog Metal for a while, a theme they repeat later on. This section certainly shows the band’s diversity as it switches between delicate piano to the aforementioned heavy motif.

This is a decent album with many classy moments but it fails to move me sufficiently and there’s the rub, music has to spark something within and I’m afraid Sylvan don’t have that certain something.
