There is a quality that runs through all the diversity that the music throws at you.

The Akinesis Project consists of Italian vocalist Gabriele Caspani and guitarist Nando Mambretti. Their first CD since 2005, ‘The PassAge’ is inspired by the passage of time over the years with each song reflecting a certain era or age in the timeline of the duo. I’d not come across the pair before now and with a promo photo reminding me of a Tenacious D shot, the two standing by a lakeside with just acoustic guitar and mike stand, I was certainly unsure as what to expect.

Opening track ‘Alien’, starts off with what sounds like some violin chops before the flute joins in over the acoustic rhythm and keyboards for a quirky ballad. Next up ‘Taken’, steps up the tempo a little with a catchy acoustic riff and some hard edged vocals before another slow ballad. But there’s more to Akinesis than that. ‘Distant Tears’ brings in the electric guitar and powerchords for the first time, soaring vocals reminiscent of Danny Vaughn’s Tyketto highlights take the album to a completely different level. ‘Pin U W8’ is a brooding rocker conjuring up thoughts of Metallica’s ‘Nothing Else Matters’ switching comfortably from quiet verse to a pounding, evil riff of a chorus.

And so the eclectic mix of styles goes on. Such is the diversity of the songs that there are influences and reference points a plenty. A bit of Styx here and there with ‘Song Of Simplicity’. ’Theology’ sees the return of the Flute with a bit of Sax thrown in its almost Ska beat has an old Madness feel to it. ‘Second Life’ rocks it up with the best before ‘Beat’ returns to the acoustic guitar and piano soft rock sound. The final tracks being Italian language versions of two of the album tracks.

There is so much going on in this album, from the range of styles, some unusual choices of instruments for a rock album that it really shouldn’t work, yet somehow there is a quality that runs through all the diversity that the music throws at you. Gabriele Caspani’s vocals are faultless throughout, it would be harsh on Akinesis to say he’s better than this, but I’d love to hear him belting out a few melodic rockers with a couple of meaty guitars, keyboards and full band behind him. Akinesis actually have managed to capture some of the emotion and power of the changes in their lives that the albums blurb seemingly boldly proclaimed. The mix of pop, rock balladry certainly won’t be to everyone’s taste and to be honest I’m still not 100% certain why I like this album, but surprisingly I do – open your mind and check out some of the tracks on their website or Facebook pages. You might be surprised too.
