High quality song writing, production and execution.

It has taken them more than a decade and a whole multitude of line-up changes but German power metallers Elmsfire have finally unleashed their debut album in the shape of ‘Thieves Of The Sun’. In keeping with their tumultuous history the making of said album did not pass entirely without incident; the incumbent vocalist bailing out right at the moment the music was done and dusted and the vocals scheduled to be recorded. In stepped Ross Thompson (of acapella metal merchants Van Canto fame) to help them out although his other commitments meaning that he has in turn been replaced by the enigmatically monikered Erdmann for the upcoming live shows.

There is a lot to like about ‘Thieves Of The Sun’ and it is a good example of the crowded power metal genre without coming across as average or run of the mill. In Thompson they secured the services of a very capable vocalist with considerable range and expression and after the spoken introduction of ‘Towards The Gate of Hercules’ he sets the tone on the galloping ‘Worth A Tale’. The themes are largely concerned with epic journey across the open seas, complete with the sounds of waves crashing and other nautical imagery that will appeal to fans of both pirate and Viking metal. Guitarists Doro and Germano trade solos and riffs at an ever increasing pace as they move through the gears on the infectious ‘Stormchild’ and the epic and versatile ‘Ahab’. The latter is arguably the stand out moment as it takes the listener on a voyage of treasure, pirates and the high seas with layers of keyboards and crunching guitars proving the perfect combination of power and melody. This is a very accessible and enjoyable first full length effort from Elmsfire that has certainly been well worth the long wait. The new vocalist undoubtedly has a tough act to follow in Thompson but will hopefully prove up to the task. With an ever increasing number of new and recommended bands vying for a share of our attention (and wallets) there has to be an emphasis on high quality song writing, production and execution – all of which Elmsfire have most definitely achieved.
