New album by the Swiss band.

Polution have been around since 1997 and in their current form since 2005 and 'Beyond Control' is now their second for the steadfast Escape Music label.

The band apparently started their life mainly doing covers of the likes of AC/DC and Metallica before trying to develop their own sound and try as hard as I can to divorce that information from my mind I am left with the feeling they are somewhat stuck for the direction they wish to take.

On the positive side, 'Beyond Control' is a polished product. The production and mix are flawless and the songs themselves are good. The negative is that, virtually, on every song I could easily be listening to someone else. The PR notes mention Nickelback, fair enough, but at the same time you could add The Almighty, Poison, AC/DC and some blatant Metallica sounds to the equation. The album, unfortunately, starts with one of my pet hates....a pointless intro in the shape of 'Missing Danger'. 40 seconds of nothing that goes nowhere. From that point on the album seems to go in stages. 'Fire' and 'Live Until You Die' are AC/DC style hard edged rockers of good quality but, regrettably, nothing you have not heard before. Not until track 4, 'Forever And A Day', do we get anything of sheer class. This is a well written, well constructed song. It's also a ballad and allows the band to shine.

The album then seems to go through the “modern metal” stage with songs like 'Follow Me', 'The Band' and 'War' seeming as if someone had swallowed a Shinedown album prior to writing them. Again there is nothing wrong with these but the lack of originality is disturbing. By the time 'Flying' hits the speakers I am convinced I am listening to Metallica's infamous Black Album. Stunning to say the least, but for all the wrong reasons. 'RIP', 'Bite Me' and 'All In' finish off the album and are, once again, OK songs which, whilst sounding like the Almighty meets Poison, do nothing to appease the overall disappointment.

Ironically, I feel Polution are a talented bunch of Swiss rockers. They just need to sit down and work out what they want to be and definitely do not need to be copycats. They can write good songs and probably just need a quality producer to point them in the right direction.
