A half decent album from a band that has been out of the loop for a long time.

It’s been nine years since Eve 6 released the disappointing ‘It’s All in Your Head’ album and twelve since they released the phenomenal ‘Horrorscope’. That final album ultimately led to the band’s demise due to poor sales and problems that had built up within the band as a result of being successful at such a young age. A permanent hiatus seemed the only answer whilst vocalist Max Collins dealt with his drink problem and the rest of the band recovered from mental exhaustion. More recently after forming the experimental Sugi Tap, the precursor to the reformed Eve6, the band decided to go the whole hog and write new material and get help from a management company. The result was that Fearless signed them and this new album has appeared pretty much to everyone’s surprise. Anyone expecting a rerun of ‘Horrorscope’ should look away now. Anyone wanting to listen to Collins clever lyrics woven into a fabric of nifty pop songs that in part emulate today’s pop punk elite should find plenty to keep them happy here.

The production on ‘Speak In Code’ is a little on the thin side with many of the songs lacking the punch and weight that you’d associate with the band at their peak. Opener ‘Curtain’ and the catchy ‘Victoria’ suffer as a result; great pop songs-the latter having an almost Ricky Martin vibe-with a distinct lack of oomph. ‘B.F.G.F’ bucks that trend somewhat with its staccato riff and ‘Lost and Found’ is a short sharp gem, yet there is a feeling here that many of the songs simply sound like many other bands in the pop rock genre and Eve 6 are merely hitching a ride; ‘Lion’s Den’ could be Hawk Nelson, ‘Situation Infatuation’ borrows heavily from the Dandy Warhol’s ‘So Bohemian Like You’ and ‘Blood Brothers’ could be a Bowling For Soup song(ironically the chorus is about Bowling). This is a half decent album from a band that has been out of the loop for a long time and although we should be grateful that it steers clear of the experimental edge of ‘It’s All in Your Head’ it is perhaps a little safe, generic.

The light as candy floss production does the material no favours whatsoever and the overall impression is of a band that has lost some of its identity.
