If you're an old school metal fan then this album should be high on your shopping list.

After a gap of four years which saw them lose not one but two vocalists as well as their record deal with Limb Music, German four piece Gun Barrel return with album number five ‘Brace For Impact’ and the backing of a new label, Massacre. In their twelve year history Gun Barrel have struggled to maintain continuity at the mike stand but, despite some initial reservations on my part, debutant Patrick Sühl could be the missing link they’ve been waiting for. His more strained, throaty delivery differs from the more melodic tones of his predecessors Guido Felhausen and Xaver Drexler but it seems to suit the style of the band much better. That said I still find his slightly off key delivery on some of the choruses a little disconcerting but what Sühl lacks in range or pitch he makes up for with pure unbridled enthusiasm as he attacks each line as if his life depends on it.

If you haven’t come across Gun Barrel before, they play good old fashioned metal that’s imbibed with a real rock ‘n’ roll spirit. Think of Saxon and Accept jamming with Motörhead and you’ll have a fair idea where they are coming from. There’s a good mix of tracks here from fist pumpin’ metal anthems like ‘Brace For Impact’ and ‘Dancing On Torpedos’ to down ‘n’ dirty groove laden rockers such as ‘Start A Riot’, ‘The Wild Hunt’ and the bass heavy ‘Stand Your Ground’. There really aren’t any weak tracks on this record just good time ass kickin’ rock ‘n’ metal from start to finish that will have you reaching for your tennis racket and air guitaring along with reckless abandon!

The rest of the band - Rolf Tanzuis on guitar, bassist Tomcat Kintgen and drummer Toni Pinciroli – are an impressively tight unit who just lock in and get on with the job in hand with the minimum of flash and pretension. As with their last album ‘Outlaw Invasion’ they have once again teamed up with Yenz Leonhardt and Tommy Hansen who have given the album a crisp, full sound where every instrument is given equal weighting the mix.

So if you haven’t as yet discovered the delights of Gun Barrel and you’re an old school metal fan then ‘Brace For Impact’ should be high on your shopping list. As for existing fans this could very well be their best album yet so brace yourself for impact and jump right in!
