Album by Danish rocker Dennis Develin.

Danish rocker Dennis Develin claims he makes old school cock rock anthems and has been involved in many top Danish bands including Sticky Sweet and Pure Innocence. In fact his song ‘Ladies of the Eighties’ was the most downloaded song from the compilation CD ‘Hollywood Hairspray’ which featured Pretty Boy Floyd, Enuff ‘z’ Nuff and Crash Diet!

This release was recorded at Jailhouse Studios and mastered and mixed by Tommy Hansen who has worked with Helloween, TNT and Pretty Maids which really puts Dennis in pretty good company! He handles all vocals and bass guitar while Jonas Roxx has taken care of guitar and drums. The production is both powerful and clear as opening number ‘All You Got’ fires out the speakers and is not too dissimilar to Bonfire but the strain in the vocal department is at odds with the song; indeed this is my main problem here in that Dennis does not really possess a voice strong enough to do his songs justice. Luckily, however, ‘Backseat Fighter’ has a strong chorus of backing vocals that propels the song along well and is also from the Accept guitar school of riffery and is a stand out track on this release.

If you’re a fan of Lordi then ‘Afraid’ or ‘Cant Die Fast Enough’ could certainly be your cup of tea, and from my perspective I certainly would not class this music as cock rock as it’s more in line with classic German/Scandinavian metal. The guitar riffs all ring sharp and despite any flawed lyrics it all sounds like good fun.

If any of you are old enough to remember (and loved a band called) Artch then ‘MF Man’ will put a smile on your face as it brought to mind that band; unfortunately ‘Pussy as a Friend’ will not! It may class its self as cock rock though it really is just plain infantile and sounds like it was written during a tea break with minimal focus on the lyrical content. Things don’t get better on the ballad ‘Never Let You Go’ which painfully reveals Dennis’s vocal limitations and it’s a real shame as there is a good song trying to get out of there. The song I was most looking forward to hearing was ‘Ladies Of The Eighties’ and it turned to be a bit of a dud to be honest, not just the corny title but again the vocals have no hope of doing the song any sort of justice. Believe me Danger Danger had their share of awful song titles though they had a terrific singer in Ted Poley which always helped the song rise above the average: and there’s the rub.

It’s clear Dennis has the writing skills to offer something of worth, but he may just have to swallow his pride and enlist a singer to project those ideas into a more attractive package.
