This is an excellent gothic metal album.

Hanging Doll is an English gothic metal band that dates back to 2002. In 2004 tragedy struck when founding singer Rachel Lilley committed suicide and Hanging Doll almost disbanded in 2007. But they decided to continue, recruited a new singer and later released their debut ‘What Lies In Truth’ followed quickly by ‘Reason & Madness’. Hanging Doll now returns with their third offering ‘The Sacred & Profane’.

First up are some of the more aggressive tracks in ‘Cradle To The Grave’ and ‘Carnival Of Sin’. ‘Cradle…’ explodes from the off with a tremendous gothic riff so deep it cracks water pipes. Male death growling and female vocals duel away as the musicians create a whirlwind of sound. ‘Carnival’ opens with some haunting piano sounding like John Carpenter’s ‘The Fog’ theme which is soon joined by the guitar’s deep chug. The chorus contains an interest concoction of death roars and silky vocals. The central section is a slower and mellower affair for the most part with three massive gothic power ballads in ‘Lacrimosa’ ‘Only In My Reveries’ and ‘Final Descent’. All of these are highly emotional; contain huge gothic guitar progressions and plenty of atmospheric piano. But there are still a couple songs with an upper tempo including the title track. ‘The Sacred & Profane’ is powered by a bouncing riff and lots of keys to add that gothic tinge. The vocals lines are a mixture of female and clean male singing leading to a memorable duet in the chorus. By way of bookending the album the band returns to their heaviest compositions and last but not least ‘A Question Of Faith’. Foreboding piano along with nightmarish violin creates an eerie atmosphere. Once the immense death roars kick in this becomes quite hostile before a galloping riff kicks in and the song charges off. The male and female vocals interchange with each other and in style with more intense death roars to close out.

This is an excellent gothic metal album. In terms of style it’s not easy to make a comparison but at a push you could say this is a cross between Amaranthe and After Forever/HIM. Holliday is a superb vocalist and displays a glorious amount of range and styles from start to finish. This album is also full of impressive riffs powering the songs throughout with guitarist Daniel Leddy showing some superb ability. He, along with bassist and growler Kev Wilson, also add a great deal vocally as well as through their instruments. The production and technical side is first rate and polished adding a nice finish. Fans of various metal genres should take some time to check out this release. There are plenty of catchy melodies and vocals, some raucous pound riffs and enough variety to keep most fans happy. Those that have a real dislike of male growled vocals may want to approach with caution.

This quality metal release shows a band really hitting their stride making them a name to take note of.
