Full of great songs, vocals, musicianship and production values that many bigger acts cannot match.

Formed in Santos, Brazil in the early 00’s Shadowside have over the last few years built up a strong following for their powerful take on melodic heavy metal. This is my first introduction to the band, which was nearly scuppered when I saw the promo photo of the band with their female singer in the forefront because I mistakenly made the assumption that once again I had another Nightwish clone on my hands and as much as I love female fronted gothic rock bands, I wasn’t sure I was ready for another one so soon. Thank goodness that I saw sense and put the CD on the death deck immediately because what came blasting from the speakers wasn’t a Nightwish clone but instead a wonderfully heavy, yet very melodic band that has come up with a set of powerful metal songs that featured a singer with a voice not a million miles away from that of Veronica Freeman of Benedictum (a band I love). Having a singer of such quality wouldn’t work unless the band could stand up for itself as well and the three men who make up the rest of Shadowside are no slouches in the musicianship department. The guitars, bass and drums of Raphael Mattos, Ricardo Piccoli and Fabio Buitvidas are commanding, dynamic and the three never miss a trick when it comes to adding melody to their licks.

The songs then are a brazen all-out attack on the senses; they have an in your face approach and they rock. Just check out title track ‘Inner Monster Out’ featuring guest vocals from Dream Evil’s Niklas Isfeldt to see what I mean because although the track itself is an all out metal fest the band never forget the need for melodies and each of the songs on ‘IMO’ has a big hook that makes them all the more memorable. If you need more convincing then the likes of ‘Gag Order’, ‘Angel With Horns’ the intricate and cleverly arranged ‘A Smile Before Death’ and the hard rockin’ ‘Whatever Our Fortune’ with its big chorus, hard rock like riff and classy guitar solo, should be just what you need to hear for proof of Shadowside’s quality. And if the songs weren’t enough for you joining them with a massive production courtesy of Frederik Nordstrom (In Flames, At The Gates), should have you reaching for those piggy banks.

An album from a female fronted band, who play music at the heavier end of the metal sphere, full of great songs, vocals, musicianship and production values that many bigger acts cannot match - what’s not to like?
