New album by the Rock n Roll legends.

Everybody loves a come back but did the Beach Boys ever really go away? Rock n roll legends that epitomised the whole California life style, troubled cousins, friends and brothers that offered us musical harmonies for what is now fifty years! The genius of Brain Wilson has been well documented but could Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, Mike Love and David Marks pull off a Beach Boys album in this decade?

Anyone hoping for a return to the band’s surf period will be disappointed as this is closer to their seventies and eighties output that had them sitting more comfortably with bands like Chicago and America. New single and album title ‘That’s Why God Made the Radio’ a co-write with Jim Peterik is a wonderful slab of harmonies set in a mid tempo soft rock homage to everything the band stood for in their career, and is one of the biggest hits the band has had in over twenty years.

The album kicks off with the beautiful angelic voices of the band including long standing member Jeffrey Foskett’s falsetto and fades into a melancholic piano piece that brings a tear to your eye. To be honest it would have been easy to just knock out an average radio friendly album in the style of the band’s last hit ‘Kokomo’, and at times some songs like ‘Daybreak Over The Ocean’ or ‘Beaches In Mind’ almost border on parody. But then this is the Beach Boys and even the laid back ‘Spring Vacation’ has its charms in its sunny simplicity from a more innocent time in rock n roll. Brian Wilson may not have that angel of a voice anymore but his honesty shines through in his vocals on ‘Shelter’ and Jeffrey Foskett does an admirable job of replacing the late Carl Wilson’s golden tones in accompaniment.

The band really have their moment to shine on the hook laden ‘Strange World’ which is nothing less than a perfect piece of pop music that just lifts the heart. Then it happens: Brian Wilson reminding us why he is called a genius with ‘From There To Back Again’ a song as good as anything he ever released during the bands heyday! Al Jardine’s vocals bring this song to life, and its breathtaking use of melodic arrangements take the music to wondrous heights that only the Beach Boys could achieve.

Bringing the album to a close is ‘Pacific Coast Highway’ which comes across like a lost Elton John ballad from his seventies period before ‘Summers Gone’, a Jon Bon Jovi co-write bids us farewell with the lyrics “summer gone its finally sinking in”. The song floats away into the distance before all that is left is the sound of the ocean where all began so long ago.
