The LTR version have delivered big time with this superb album.

Ever since I heard the song ‘Emerald Sword’ from Rhapsody’s second album ‘Symphony Of Enchanted Lands’ I have been a huge fan of their work. I have all the special editions of their albums and have always enjoyed the dramatic symphonic metal they make. Now, however, there are two bands working under the Rhapsody banner, this one and the Alex Staropoli, Fabio Lione (Of Fire) version. And what I’m finding hard to get my head around is that both bands have almost identical sounds and because Luca Turilli wrote most of the band’s music, there seems to be little difference between them, so maybe a musical change for one of the acts might be in order. Admittedly that the music on this album is just as you would expect it to be from any band sporting the name of Rhapsody….

Once again the overblown, over the top, extravagant and just wonderful, symphonic Hollywood metal from the band kills. The walls of guitars, vocals, bass, drum and keyboards that assault you at every turn (though in a good way) and the additional choirs, orchestra and vocalists only help to make this another fine masterwork from the band.

On ‘Ascending To Infinity’ you get the usual mixture of fast paced symphonic rock together with folky interludes but this time you even get a ballad that Julio Iglesias would be proud of (I kid you not). So if your like a bit of Rhapsody check out ‘Dante’s Inferno’ which sees the band in fine fettle, the song has lots going on, with layers of keyboards and vocals accompanied by violins and choirs plus monk like chants which add a different dimension to the track. ‘Excalibur’ begins with a light airy folk melody that then explodes into life as the band play like their lives depended on it, the orchestration is once again paramount to the song bringing levels and depths to the music that few other bands can match. Here I must single out new Rhapsody vocalist Alessandro Conti for praise. He is the star of this whole album, taught at the same school as Pavarotti, the man’s awesome vocal presence commands each song and the way he puts over each track is a joy to behold. The ballad I mentioned is called ‘Luna’ and yes it is very cheesy, sung in Italian it’s something you can imagine Il Divo (or, as I said JI) doing but that said it is still great to listen to, and shows a whole different side to the band’s writing style. Finally we have ‘Of Michael The Arcangel and Lucifers Fall’ which to is just epic with a capital E: fifteen minutes of metal perfection and I could play it over and over again and never get bored.

Whichever Rhapsody you go for you’ll always be in for a treat and the LTR version have delivered big time with this superb album.
