Tarja likes 'em, they have lots of YouTube clicks, you might too.

Trent Reznor produces the music for addictive game ‘Quake', and has given us a masterwork of industrial darkness as NIN, ‘The Downward Spiral' two years before. He works with Marilyn Manson in a debauched studio session leading the quintessential "Antichrist Superstar": androgynous, doomy industro rock becoming a crossover hit everywhere, all the more amazing due to its positioning on the edge of acceptance. Even schoolkids go for it, openly brandishing said album. Metal God R.Halford smears on the eye liner and and swathes himself in fake fur to produce the mechanical hackneyed hokum of ‘Voyeurs'. Amazing times. Ones which Hannibal want to revel in. Except that it was 1996. It is now 2012. We've moved on. Some of us.

We've heard all this before. On debut ‘This Is U' certainly but same again now. This is not to rub anyone's nose in what they enjoy; they are welcome to the clanking, dancy backing and Metal-lite ethos. And, surrounded by a nicely-illustrated, expensive-looking booklet, this certainly has all those sounds.

It just doesn't go anywhere. There is a nice melodic chorus here and there, ‘Angelryche' has a great title and an even better synth into widdly solo moment, whilst the vocals run up to us and bark into our face -energetic soul, this Mr H; ‘On Your Knees' has a deep Sisters of Mercy connection through the vocal line, backed up by brittle guitars and sumptuous strings, which bother to take us to an atmospheric soundscape which Threshold might nod towards. ‘Somebody Wake Me' is almost good as it flirts with the charms of Bolan and Bowie. Or Mud, anyway, sassier vocals and an almost disregard of energy in the solo making a real claim for your time. But the word which enters the mind most here is "expected". Sometimes followed by the word "bore".
This is clearly not ideal.

Steve Sovo's six string salvos are sometimes stunning (say it three time times fast!) and the band clearly know how to turn this out beautifully. But the songs are just lacking, good examples of the genre but not strong enough to break out - the mark of a successful tune.

Tarja likes 'em, they have lots of YouTube clicks, you might too. But real Hannibal, taking those pachyderms across the Alps might be easier than making this album classic.
