Treading well-beaten territory that's already been revisited time and time again.

Since first being moulded in the symphonic image of such genre titans as Stratovarius and Rhapsody Of Fire back in 2005, there’s been precious little change to the textbook brand of power metal that 4th Dimension deal in. As such, the Italians’ first studio move features all the acrobatic hooks, raw speed and classically-inclined trimmings you’d expect of such an ensemble.

All good clean fun, then. But for a debut nearly a decade in the making, it’s disappointingly predictable and repetitious in places, with the aptly-titled ‘Everlasting’ clocking in at a filler-laden six and a half minutes. Nevertheless, the dynamic likes of ‘Sworn To The Flame’ show no small amount of promise, with a nimble-fingered wealth of melodic guitars galloping apace and winding down in all the right places. And despite the breakneck tempo at which it is executed, every riff, lick and symphonic flourish is pulled off with pinpoint precision and instantly uplifting aplomb.

Topped off with a futuristic repertoire of psychedelic synths and atmospheric programming, the electronic embellishments featured here add a fresh, instantly infectious dimension (no wordplay intended) to the mix. But it’s the blistering urgency of the countless hooks, frantic arpeggios and all-round brilliant standard of axemanship that makes ‘The White Path To Rebirth’ such a technically impressive listen. But, having been a tad overproduced by Vision Divine keyboardist Alessio Lucatti, the resulting sound quality is streamlined to the point of dulling the impact of these otherwise razor-sharp riffs, while the vocals seem altogether too quiet by comparison.

Following a tad too closely in the footsteps of their operatic predecessors, 4th Dimension have, for all their technically dazzling plus points, yet to carve their own path as musicians. And despite being tailor-made to tantalise genre addicts, they’re treading well-beaten territory that’s already been revisited time and time again.
