So much to enjoy here.

The lines defining musical styles have a tendency to become blurry and for that reason, though my tastes switch between AOR and metal on a regular basis, I have taken In This Moment to my heart, regardless of whether they would be considered too extreme for many Fireworks & Rocktopia readers.

The debut 2006 CD ‘Beautiful Tragedy’ was an uncompromising affair, quite a caustic listening experience for some, whilst the follow-up, ‘The Dream’ (2008), was dripping in melody, eschewing the death vocals and screaming guitars and almost like a totally different band. 2010’s ‘A Star-Crossed Wasteland’ seemed to marry the previous two styles perfectly yet managed to alienate some of the fans happier with the more ‘ear friendly’ direction taken by ‘The Dream’. Here we are in 2012 and ITM have pretty much had to re-invent themselves without losing any of the qualities integral to their identity and refusing to bow to any trend, in the process creating music again likely to divide their current fan-base and also those dipping a casual toe for the first time.

At the core of the band are guitarist Chris Howorth and vocalist Maria Brink who were virtually left as a duo for a while following the departure of other band members. ‘Blood’ sees them working for the third time with producer Kevin Churko, who seems to bring the best from the Howorth/Brink writing partnership. All the comings and goings during the last couple of years would normally be unsettling yet seems to have driven the writing and instilled a creative hunger. The result is a set of songs dripping in attitude and aggression yet maintaining an undercurrent of sexuality and passion.

The sensuality has acerbic characteristics, hauntingly familiar yet cut from a slightly different musical cloth and textured ever so slightly with an industrial Nine Inch Nails edge. Some of the hooks and brutal melodies are not instant whilst others envelop you, squeezing until submission to their searing addictive qualities is unavoidable. The riffs cut through at times like razors but never at the expense of the songs and the tormented themes blend to create a dramatically infused cocktail of fractured emotions. Maria Brink’s performance is staggering throughout, her astonishing vocal pyrotechnics are mesmerising and seemingly without boundaries. An ability to poison one minute with an incendiary venom, the next minute delivering an antidote, caressing and hypnotising, dragging you through a myriad of sensations. The album contains a nice balance between severity and subtlety. The likes of ‘Blood’ and ‘You’re Gonna Listen’ set the pulses racing and ‘Blood Legion’ and ’11:11’ are soothingly relaxing, like the calm after the storm. ‘Whore’ (uncomfortable lyrical context) and ‘Scarlet’ (Evanescence like) are the most commercial whilst ‘Beast Within’ would be the ideal accompaniment to a basement nightclub scene in a Blade movie.

As always the pink & fluffies are going to run a mile but for those with an appreciation for diverse types of music there is oh so much to enjoy here.
