Showcases some of the most outstanding individual performances of any MA album.

I am going to take the very unusual step of quoting from the band’s website where comments made by Andy Josh to his brother Bryan about this new album from Mostly Autumn are included: “take a flower in late spring, fairly pleasing to the eye but closed up and dense, then, with every listen acting like the sun and rain, the flower opens – the petals, like individual songs, growing, then at a certain point it just hits you and you see the beauty for what it really is.” Well, after half a dozen listens, I suppose I have just about reached mid summer in these metaphorical terms, and for me the album has now burst into full bloom and where the full effect to which Andy Josh refers have hit squarely between the ears. It is certainly worthwhile once you get it!

It is of course a moot point as to whether an album – even by a favourite band or artist – should have to take quite so long to reveal its charms, and in these days of instant gratification, there will be many who would give up after the second or third listen, if not the first. Mostly Autumn have played the change of direction or stylistic shift card before and are still here to tell the tale (a fabulous, acoustic, version of ‘Passengers’ for example, being included on the bonus disc of the special edition along with some other “old” favourites and five new songs, all performed acoustically, and wonderfully!) and the proof of this particular pudding for me will be in the eating (as it were!) when I see them live in a few weeks time. I anticipate that they will play this conceptual piece, about a supernatural orchestra playing out the soundtracks of our lives and responding to our experiences, in its entirety.

This album features exactly the same line-up as ‘Go Well…’ and showcases some of the most outstanding individual performances of any MA album. Ian Jennings’ keyboards are everywhere; and provide the basis for most of the tracks from gentle piano (‘Unquiet Tears’, ‘Things That We Notice’ and ‘Wild Eyed Skies’) to swirling synths on the title track to organ on the rocky and most unusual MA track ‘King Of The Valley’. Brian Josh’s typical guitar sound is used more sparingly than usual, but when it breaks loose as it does in the closing sections of the title track and on ‘Tennyson Mansion’, ‘Wild Eyed Skies’ and album closer ‘Top Of The World’, it is a powerful thing of beauty. And then there’s Olivia Sparnenn's crystal clear vocals… On this album she has assuredly made the female vocal lead her own. Listen to ‘Unquiet Tears’ and ‘Wild Eyed Skies’ and tell me I’m wrong! The ensemble playing is also top drawer, I should add, and listen out for a huest appearance by Troy Donockley…

Those who normally purchase albums by Mostly Autumn are encouraged to persevere, and if you are not too late to get the special edition, there is just so much to savour on the bonus disc ‘A Weather For Poets’.
