One for completists, newcomers or the curious.

Two things, firstly I have loved the voice of ex Savatage man Zak Stevens ever since I first heard him singing with that band. So, when he came along with his own project called Circle II Circle I was a more than happy bunny! The melodic power metal they played had everything that someone who likes that genre could want. And with the five studio albums that the band has released, they have always come up with some fantastic performances and songs.

Included on this album are melodic power metal gems like ‘All That Remains’, ‘Watching In Silence’, ‘In This Life’, ‘Blood Of An Angel’, ‘Redemption’, ‘Echoes’ and many more. Yet (and here is where my second point comes in) I just don’t see the reasoning behind this release. It is supposed to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Circle II Circle’s formation as a band and on the plus side it does have thirty-two tracks all re-mastered (though I’m not sure if they needed to be) and out of those thirty-two we get a handful of B-Sides and live tracks to fill out the CD. But if you’re a fan of the band (like me) then you’ll have everything here and the few bonus cuts just won’t be enough I believe to make you shell out for this double album.

If this is a package supposed to mark a special celebration for the band, then for me it should have included a lot more unreleased tracks and better bonus songs. So maybe instead of a double CD of re-mastered songs we could have had instead, a best of first disc and then a bonus disc full of new, un-released and rare tracks that would have made this album that little bit more special. However, I suppose if you haven’t yet fallen for the band and its music, then – yes – I admit this is a fine place to start.

So it’s one for completists, newcomers or the curious… As I’ve already commented, I love the music of Circle II Circle, it’s just that personally I don’t get the need for “Best of…’ albums at all.
