Quite possibly one of the best debuts of its kind, ever!

Monterrey, Nuevo Leon in Mexico is the place from where Neural/FX hail and let’s face it Mexico isn’t really the place you usually go to find a band that play dark, heavy intricately arranged technical progressive rock. The band clearly worship at the feet of Dream Theater (heavier stuff), Symphony X and Metallica with healthy doses of Zero Hour and Power of Omens stirred into the mix, though the band also have a very strong identity of their own. The musicianship, arrangements and production and sheer class that oozes from every pore of this album, shows a new group of musicians who could, given the right exposure and chances go all the way to the very top.

‘Abreaction’ the title of the band’s debut CD is a term used by psychoanalysts to explain the way a person can relive an experience and then try and purge its emotional impact on the psyche. Personally, however, I have found that I have loved reliving this aural experience and the emotional impact that the band’s music has had upon me. Starting with the title track Neural/FX lull this listener into a false sense of security with a beautiful lone vocal from soprano Anabel Olivio, hauntingly weaving itself in and out of the speakers until it crashes into the intense technical prog maelstrom that is second track ‘Alpha’, where the band then illustrate their command of all things progressive metal. ‘Matter Of Time’ storms along with a kind of Zero Hour meets the aggression of Metallica (especially in the vocal arrangements); it also has some of the most intense musicianship I’ve heard in ages, the bass and guitars of Antonio Vazquez and Rene Montt at times rivalling those of the Dream Theater boys.

Other tracks to watch out for are ‘Insane’ with its massive hook that sees the band almost enter melodic metal territory and ‘Ancient Edge’ which once again features some sublime bass playing from Mr Vazquez, clever time changes and complex lead guitar work that just has to be heard. ‘Mental Mutiny’ a track dark and angry enough to have come off Zero Hours ‘Towers Of Avarice’ album, is a multifaceted affair and has to be played many, many times before you get full enjoyment from it. Finally I’d like to mention ‘Eternal Dream’ where the use of some Jordan Rudess inspired keyboards gives a whole different sound and intensity to the music of Neural/FX, as they drive the music ever onward into shadowy vistas and strange landscapes.

I’ve got to say that I love what Neural/FX have achieved on ‘Abreaction’, I love the melancholy, intensity, anger, passion, amazing musicianship, production and well just about everything else on this release. It’s quite possibly one of the best debuts of its kind, ever!
