A challenging listen for both newcomers and long-time admirers.

Recently seen at venues across Europe where they appeared as the opening act for Flying Colors, Swedish proggers Beardfish return with the seventh studio album ‘The Void’. Long time supporter Mike Portnoy has regularly sung the praises of the band in interviews and it therefore came as no surprise that they were on tour with his latest project. Darker, heavier and more metallic than its 2011 predecessor Mammoth, ‘The Void’ is an album that tackles themes of loss, love, despair and hope as the quirky quartet have sought to channel the energy and emotion of their live performances into the studio. It would be fair to say that Beardfish are not a band that have, or indeed probably ever will, make the same album twice and you rarely get a sense of déjà-vu from the eclectic Swedes. They have also been remarkably prolific, especially when compared with some of their peers, seven albums in little more than a decade representing a pretty swift work-rate.

They may be keen to experiment but in keeping with much of their back catalogue Beardfish retain their distinctive flair for evoking memories of the vintage prog bands of the past, specifically 70s greats King Crimson, Gentle Giant and early Genesis. That said, the incorporation of Opeth inspired death metal growls from vocalist, keyboardist and primary songwriter Rikard Sjöblom will have some prog traditionalists running for the hills. Clocking in at a lengthy sixteen minutes is the epic ‘Note’, a piece of music that builds to a suitably dynamic conclusion and proves to be the stand-out moment. Not that the other songs are not equally as rewarding with the jazz fusion, piano-led and nostalgic ‘Seventeen Again’ contrasting sharply with ‘Voluntary Slavery’ and ‘Turn To Gravel’ where they crank up the amps and leave the rough edges intact. Ever since they first appeared on the prog rock radar Beardfish have proven to have an uncanny ability for being able to sound traditional and fresh both at the same time and ‘The Void’ is no exception.

An album which will once again present a challenging listen for both newcomers and long-time admirers, for those with the necessary patience and persistence it becomes ever more engaging and compelling which each subsequent listen.
