Skysent Lu has much to offer.

All credit to Skysent Lu a Greek outfit from Athens, rather than try to get record label backing they have released this album ‘2 Seconds Late’ themselves, demonstrating dedication and at least they have something solid to offer any interested record label.

Their influences seem to stem from early British rock and prog bands, and listening to ‘Few Moments’ it could almost be latter day Iron Maiden or even Marillion, the song being a smouldering ballad with a strength and conviction in its delivery. Particularly impressive is the guitar work supplied by both Costas Karapetses and Christos Spyropoulos that is both fluid and effective when required. The strangely titled ‘Bob’s Adventure’ has a fine lead vocal from Nondas Emmanouil which brought to mind Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam fame and is certainly cut from the grunge cloth in some respects.

If I do have a criticism to level at this release, it is in the pace and clinical sound of so many of the songs; it’s almost as if we never really get out of third gear and it does at times miss more of a full throttle approach that could have made this release even better. However, there is clearly a lot of thought behind the Skysent Lu blueprint of musical ideas and they touch on many bases which keeps things interesting. The pace is picked up on ‘Follow Me’ which is an all out rocker that is both natural and convincing before we tread more carefully on ‘Last Man’s Cry’ which evokes a story of troubled thoughts and lost hopes; clearly there are no problems here with a language barrier and the band have real stories to tell.

I am not sure about the jazzy leanings of ‘Two Seconds Late’ being to everyone’s taste but at least the band is willing to try new ideas and keep the music fresh and interesting, but clearly Skysent Lu has much to offer and if a major label could give this release a good push I am sure there is an audience that would embrace the band.
