A ripping and funky hard rock release.

The idea for Audio Porn started after Azriel St Michael, (Jezebels Kiss), teamed up with Black Sun whose debut album was produced by Jeff Westlake, (Hydrogyn). After the record was completed they started working on some songs together then former JK drummer Byron Black was bought in and so Audio Porn was born.

With that name and a photo of a scantily clad woman in handcuffs, this will scream sleazy hard rock to most. Many will also think its some old rockers resurrecting their careers in a genre that’s seen better days. Thankfully whilst Audio Porn clearly has its sound bedded firmly in that 80’s era, there is enough of a modern slant for other listeners. This is effectively an album of two halves with the first batch of songs heavier in consistency than the more melodic second. ‘Deeper Than The Bone’ is full of attitude with a deep grinding riff and a pounding drum beat all completed by some profanity laced lyrics. But the pick of this opening salvo is ‘It’s Not A Dream’ with a progression that gallops along powering to a very catchy chorus. Then there is the less aggressive second half which includes ‘Butterfly’ with its filthy effects laced guitar giving it a truly sleazy feel. ‘Let Me Go’ erupts with an uplifting six string melody preceding a lighter acoustic styled verse all before the rolling riff returns creating a fine memorable chorus. This is just nudged out of best song by ‘Breath Away’. This modern sounding rocker has a crisp punchy riff in its opening bars and verse before exploding into another immensely infectious chorus.

This is a ripping and funky hard rock release with a dirty retro foundation that has been given a fresh approach. It’s got more than its feet planted in that sordid past; it’s literally up to its neck in it. But the sound has been dragged kicking and screaming into the present with various twists and licks. But for all its positives this album has one big draw back and that is that it is a complete re-record of the Jezebels Kiss ‘Positive Hostility’ album. If you already have that in your collection you technically already have this and that will be a letdown to some despite this being a fine album. St Michael puts in a good performance and gives a varied display vocally as well as playing the keyboards, rhythm/acoustic guitars and even the lead on some tracks. The guitar work, regardless of who is actually playing, is excellent and gives the tracks real fire and guts. Westlake has totally reworked the technical side and has produced a quality sounding album that still retains a little rawness. There is a lot to enjoy about this catchy album and it is one that should find a positive reaction with many rock enthusiasts.

If you don’t have ‘Positive Hostility’ nestling in your collection, this is one form of porn you won’t be embarrassedly stashing underneath the bed!
