Plenty here to play on your mind and get you hooked.

Hailing from Serbia and founded in 2007 by brothers Zoltan and Robert Bludal, Wicked Coffee Shoppers are an alternative rock band with Damaged Sunrise being their first album release. With influences from Grunge, Funk as well as a bit of straight forward rock music, it’s an eclectic mix of songs, but under pinned by a dark, almost depressing sort of sound and tones to the songs. Although the basic line up is guitar, bass and drums, the music is full of distortion, electronic elements and effects throughout.

First few plays of the CD felt more like enduring rather than enjoying the music, however slowly but surely there’s some indeterminable hook that draws you into the songs. Album opener ‘Shooting Around’ shows the Nirvana influence, be it without the strength of Cobain’s vocals. ‘Jumping In The Line’ has a Blur, ‘Song No. 2’ feel to it, though a little less frenetic. Yet despite the obvious influences, a darker ambient feel to the songs maintains the bands identity. Haunting ballad ‘Rylinn’ is a triumph of simplicity with its acoustic guitars softly picking out both rhythm and harmonies. The funkiness of ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Band’ seem reminiscent of Electric Six’s ‘Gay Bar’ before, at last, a pretty much straight forward rocker in the shape of ‘Ordinary Cemetery’ brings a degree of normality to the album.

So, this is not an album you are likely to warm to with a first listen and I really was ready to dismiss it after a couple of plays as just a bit too dark and depressing for its own good. Distorted vocals and a low key grunge sound don’t exactly grab you by the balls and encourage you to play again. But the insistent rhythms do start to draw you back and notwithstanding a lack of originality across certain tracks, the band’s sound certainly is distinctive and can suck you into the world of Wicked Coffee Shoppers. More of a slow roast coffee than instant, perhaps? (Sorry about that…!!)

Not an album to lift your soul or to sit with in moments of depression, but with a bit of patience and open mindedness there is plenty here to play on your mind and get you hooked. And I don’t even drink coffee.
