An essential purchase for all broad minded prog rock aficionados.

Telergy is the work of a gifted US based multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer by the name of Robert McClung who, after almost two decades working in pop music, has decided to indulge his passion for progressive rock that has remained with him since his formative teenage years listening to bands like Rush and Pink Floyd. Now in tune with those halcyon days of 70s prog ‘The Exodus’ is a bold instrumental interpretation of the story of Moses and the Israelites as seen through the eyes of an old grandmother who recounts the age old story to her curious grandson.

The story starts with the enslavement of the Israelites by the Pharaohs before punishing plagues brought down by God on the Egyptians led to the release of his people. It then follows Moses and the Israelites on their torturous forty year journey to the Promised Land. As well as proving to be a very enjoyable bible lesson, the seventy minutes of music are so cinematic in scope that you can’t help but get swept up in the plight of Moses and his followers. On ‘Enslavement’ for example plaintive guitar melody conveys the helplessness of their slavery before building to a crescendo of powerful riffs that makes sure that you also feel their deep resentment at their plight. The album centrepiece is the 15 minute ‘Plagues’ that moves from new age ambient themes, to expansive orchestral passages and upbeat power chords (even managing to steal the first few bars from the intro to Rush’s Tom Sawyer in the process) with consummate ease as McClurg coveys God’s wrath and the Egyptian’s fear with every note.

The thrill of the flight and escape from the Pharaoh’s armies is brilliantly conveyed by upbeat, guitar led, neo-classical pieces and ethnic eastern instrumentation on ‘Escape’ and ‘Pharaoh’s Revenge’ before ‘Wandering’ and ‘Is There Anybody Out There?’ provide stark soundscapes of desolation and despair at their long journey until ‘Canaan’ where themes of trepidation at finally reaching the Promised Land give way to those of joy and celebration.

If there is a downside to this excellent instrumental album it’s the narration by the grandmother and her attentive grandson. Although it provides a welcome narrative to the story, their polite and lovey dovey banter begins to rate rather high on the ‘Gonna Gork Meter’ after a while!

That minor quibble aside this is an essential purchase for all you broad minded prog rock aficionados.
