An interesting album for fans of bands such as Incubus and Porcupine Tree.

Fen is a Canadian band hailing from Nelson, British Columbia. Formed in 1998, the band´s breakthrough album was its fourth, entitled ´Trails Out Of Gloom´ which got worldwide attention in 2010. This was the first album that Fen produced under the Californian label Ripple Music and it is with them that its follow-up album ´Of Losing Interest´ has been released.

Cited as a return to a heavier sound, the album reintroduces the 1999 line up; namely Doug Harrison on guitars and vocals, Sam Levin on lead guitar, Jeff Caron on bass and Nando Polesel on drums. ´Of Losing Interest´ is a very dangerous title for an album described by the label as “a contrast of technical virtuosity layered against warm low end organics” - not exactly inviting to my mind! However, the album does keep ones interest as the songs have structure, clear vocals and a point. I would describe their sound as 75% Prog Metal and 25% grungy rock. Kicking off with ´Riddled´, it has a memorable riff which moves the song up a few gears into a fast instrumental passage and an abrupt ending. The next track, ´Of Losing Interest´ is more prog based with a brooding vocal performance and staccato guitar riff and a purposefully discordant guitar break. ´Nice For Three Days´ is an interesting piece with a guitar drone, quirky lyrics and effects-laden soloing; the drums are upfront and accompany the catchy chorus nicely.

Later on in the album, an interesting track is ´The Glove´ which although three and a half minutes long and with a very quirky vocal has an incredible number of tempo changes and an extended instrumental ending to boot. ´Light Up The End´ is a more classic rock song with an acoustic intro, a slow verse vocal and then launches into a rousing chorus and hyperbolic guitar outro. Following this, ´Pilot Plant´ is a very experimental track with at times a jazzy feel before the final track ´Snake Path´ which is a return to the overall prog style of the band.

All in all, an interesting album and as the press release suggests, for fans of bands such as Incubus and Porcupine Tree.
