Good, honest hard rock.

Whilst Brighton Rock haven't made a studio album since 1991's 'Love Machine', two founder members of the recently resurfaced Canadian rockers are on their second full album of new material with their latest project, Fraze Gang. Guitarist Greg Fraser and bassist Stevie Skreebs were joined by drummer Phil Epp to release the 'Jackhammer' album back in 2008, followed by an EP in 2009, and have recently been expanded to a four-piece for album number two by the addition of guitarist Derek McGowan - ironically the man who stood in for Fraser during their European dates in 2002/3.

Fraze Gang's approach is simple and honest, they write insistent guitar riffs that groove away and lodge themselves in your brain, overlaid by Fraser's quirky Canadian vocal style, which has echoes of Andy Curran and Kim Mitchell. For good examples of their no-nonsense attack you need look no further than the opening salvo of 'Saint Or Sinner' and 'In Your Face', both boasting grinding twin guitars and plenty of attitude, leaving you in no doubt that this certainly isn't the keyboard-drenched melodic rock that Brighton Rock are best known for. It isn't all one paced either, with the thrash-like 'Juggernaut' and searing, guitar-driven 'Rampage' at one end of the spectrum, and the more melodic 'Never Want To Say Goodbye' and the gentle acoustic ballad 'This Is It' at the other. There's also a catchier side to 'Tough Enough' and 'Don't Call Us, We'll Call You' that places them amongst the highlights, and even the old blues chestnut 'I Just Want To Make Love To You' has enough drive to it that it doesn't come across as filler, although to me the sheer simplicity of 'White Lightning' makes it the weakest track.

Ably produced by Greg himself and mixed and mastered by none other than Beau Hill, '2' is a punchy and clear sounding album with big guitars, big drums and a fine set of songs. They've built on the style of the debut and improved on it in every area, with the addition of Derek McGowan giving them more sound options, especially, I expect, when they play live. The vocals may be an acquired taste for some, but if good, honest hard rock is what you're looking for then you could do far worse than Fraze Gang's second CD.
