Debut album from Finnish glam-rockers.

Just what the hell is happening over there in Scandinavia? Finnish upstarts Reckless Love are the latest band of twenty-somethings intent on transporting us back to a time when guitars were tuned the traditional way and back-combed hair, guyliner and spandex would get you played on MTV. As with bands like Wigwam, The Poodles, Crazy Lixx and Crashdiet, the emphasis is on fun party rock’n’roll. I’m fully aware that most of us have already lived through the glam/sleaze phenomenon in its first and second waves and these bands are basically adding nothing new to it, but there’s a new younger audience ready to lap it up like The Sweet and Motley Crue never happened. And besides, these bands are doing it so well, and Reckless Love are certainly not lagging behind the others.

Fronted by Crashdiet’s last singer Olli Herman, the debut album from this four-piece just kind of washed over me the first time I heard it, but fate is a funny thing and when the disc was the only CD that would play on my temperamental car stereo during a four hour drive to Scotland, my opinion gradually changed from “Meh!” to “Yeah!” Reckless Love are not re-inventing the wheel here but they are driving it to some very nice places on the back of tidy guitar riffs from Pepe and a wonderfully tight rhythm section in bass player Jalle Verne and drummer Hessu Maxx. The songs are no slouches either with simple verses, memorable choruses and lyrics that a goldfish could remember on opener ‘Feel My Heat’, ‘Wild Touch’ and ‘One More Time’, along with the occasional stab at a slightly darker and sleazy type of rock on the brilliant ‘Badass’.

Don’t be fooled into thinking they’re a one trick pony either, the subtle keyboard fills and clever arrangements on the pop-metal highlight ‘Beautiful Bomb’ and the Dokken-esque ‘Romance’ suggest there’s considerable intelligence at work here, not to mention the mature ballad ‘Sex’ with it’s stunning musicality. There are times when their influences are maybe a little too obvious, the ‘I Was Made For Loving You’ disco beat on ‘Back To Paradise’ or a touch of the Joan Jett’s on ‘Love Machine’ for instance, and not even a blatant early Van Halen section can save ‘So Yeah!’ from being just plain ordinary.

With a powerful and punchy production from Ilkka Wirtanen being the icing on the cake, Reckless Love have made as good a debut album as you’re likely to hear in this genre, and with the mighty Spinefarm label behind them I can see nothing but a successful career ahead. Just watch them go!
