A highly competent and exciting album.

One of the lesser known acts of the NWOBHM, Megaton – like so many of their compatriots – released just one single in their brief lifetime before succumbing to market forces; and losing vocalist Ross Torlak to the sunny climes of California. But having played together off-and-on over the years, Torlak and guitarist Jeremy Nagle, the band’s nucleus, have never lost the desire to make music and the result is ‘Returning With Vengeance’, a collection of material recorded last year in the US.

From the off – a kick-ass intro, neck-breaking riff and screeeeam – it’s obvious that this is a highly competent and exciting album, and what it might lack in finesse it makes up for with enthusiasm in bucketloads. So the twin-openers of ‘Don’t Fall Out’ and ‘Die Hard’, push the pedal to the metal and although things do appear to gear down a bit with ‘Love Is Hard To Find’ the Maiden-esque main riff and frenetic shredding don’t leave a lot of time for respite.

“We knew that we had to come back with a bang, so to speak, and show we meant business,” says Nagle. “We didn’t just want to compete with the NWOBHM; we wanted to show that we are capable of competing with all the modern bands that are out there and delivering the goods in a modern way. We knew the album had to have a lot of energy, and be intelligent and coherent. And without blowing our own trumpets, I think we achieved just that.”  Both sides of the single ‘Aluminium Lady’ have been given the twenty-first century treatment (‘Die Hard’ was the flip) and although the A-side does feature some extremely odd lyrics (not often “shish kebab” makes it into a song) the original is a highly sought after piece of vinyl. “We hoped it would do well back then,” notes Nagle, “and I suppose in our subconscious we hoped it might be thought of as some sort of classic in the future, but it’s still weird for us to see it fetch 100 dollars on the ’Net!”

The ‘bonus’ on the album is a 1981 recording of ‘Tallahassee Lassie’ which features Sweet drummer Mick Tucker occupying both the drum stool and the producer’s chair. “It was recorded in 1981 at Kingsway Recorders (Ian Gillan’s old studio) and we did the vocals and overdubs at Ringo Starr’s studio on his estate in Ascot.  It was never released, so we have included it as a special dedication to Mick who was our friend, and who sadly died about ten years ago.”

OK, some of the lyrical content may have dated over the years, and Tagle’s vocals can be an acquired taste at times – think Krokus’s Marc Storace with a mouthful of drawing pins – but the songs are as fresh and lively as a new-born lamb. Take your credit card to www.megatonmusic.com and enjoy!
