‘Noko’ sounds like one long dull song. A way too long one that is…!

Noko is a four-piece Polish band that started in 2004 and worked its way up to a Polish music TV show. There, in 2011, these guys won a prestigious Audience Award. This shouldn’t mislead you into false belief that Noko is a great innovative metal band, though. Any public or TV show award ever given to a musician has never meant that there’s originality present in the artist’s work.

As suggested previously, all the songs on Noko’s eponymous debut are the same. And what’s worse, there are as many as eleven of them! The omnipresent monotony can easily put a metal fan to sleep. After listening to this record about 10 – 15 times, there was still no song that would stand out to the rest. Perhaps this is to be understood as a musical balance? What sort of balance is it though, when the songs are each a mix of several genres. ‘The Day Before’ has a grunge feeling, ‘Bad Thoughts’ are somewhat of a power ballad, in ‘Free Your Love’ there’s the evidence of nu-metal influence and ‘Clouds Are Closing In’ is plain boring. Not to forget that the last song ‘Before I Sleep’ will most likely come after you’ve already nodded off. And so on.

Personally, I still fancy the first track ‘The Day Before’ the most. Nice heavy guitar riffs and drums can’t be denied a bit of praise. Melodies probably won’t annoy anyone, but neither will they surprise with creativity.

‘Noko’ is a well produced album from the Polish band, as well as the singer’s English pronunciation is very good. Not that I would expect that much… From an album set in metal world full of colourful sub-genres that descended into greyness. ‘Noko’ evokes sad bleakness of a rainy day. This is a band for post-grunge/alternative/nu-metal fans. Hence not a piece I could recommend with a straight face. It’s the sort of record that can be played on a radio without offending the public. All in all, ‘Noko’ sounds like one long dull song. A way too long one that is…!
